A devastating Ebonyi flood has submerged homes, farmlands and properties in Onicha Mini Settlement, Ohuegu Village, Mgbom Okposi, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, forcing several families from their ancestral homes.
The flooding, reportedly triggered by the overflowing Esu River, has destroyed buildings and agricultural lands, with affected residents appealing for urgent government and humanitarian intervention.

Esu River Floods Homes in Ohaozara
Human rights and public interest lawyer, Ikechukwu Obasi, raised the alarm in a statement on Friday, September 25, 2026, after visiting the affected community.
Obasi said he visited Ohuegu Village and the residence of Oti Ngwoke, where he witnessed the impact of the flooding on family houses and properties.
According to him, some of the affected buildings were constructed by the residents’ late fathers but have now been destroyed or severely damaged by the flood.
“The flood destroyed the family houses erected by our late fathers including the properties in the buildings,” Obasi said.

He added that the overflowing Esu River had entered residential areas, causing some buildings to collapse and leaving families displaced.
“The women are seen crying for emergency assistance over their destroyed livelihood. Overflowing Esu River found its way to homes and caused some buildings to collapse. They are seeking assistance because they’re now internally displaced,” he said.
Ebonyi Flood Destroys Yam, Cassava Farms
Beyond the damage to homes and household property, the flooding has also submerged agricultural land in the community.
Obasi said yam and cassava farms belonging to residents had been covered by floodwater, raising concerns over the loss of livelihoods for families who depend largely on farming.
One of the affected residents said, “The flood has submerged our yam and cassava farms.”
The destruction of farmland could further compound the hardship faced by displaced families, particularly as farmers depend on their crops for both food and income.
Lawyer Appeals to Ebonyi Government
Obasi appealed to Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, the Chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area, Osborne Umahi, and the senator representing Ebonyi South Senatorial District, Anthony Okorie Ani, to urgently intervene.
He also called on the Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency to immediately assess the extent of the damage and provide relief materials to affected residents.
According to him, displaced families require food, temporary shelter, medicine and clothing as they struggle to cope with the disaster.
Call for Esu River Desilting, Channelisation
The lawyer urged the government to provide temporary accommodation for families displaced by the flooding while taking steps to reduce the risk of future incidents.
He specifically called for the desilting and channelisation of the Esu River to improve water flow and reduce the likelihood of further flooding.
Obasi also appealed for compensation and agricultural support for farmers whose yam and cassava farms were destroyed.
He described residents of Mgbom Okposi as peaceful and hardworking farmers, urging government agencies, non-governmental organisations and humanitarian organisations to support the affected families.

The latest incident highlights the continuing impact of flooding on homes, farmland and livelihoods in vulnerable communities.
For the residents of Ohuegu and surrounding areas in Ohaozara, the immediate priority remains assistance for displaced families and assessment of the damage caused by the overflowing Esu River.
