The Delta State Government has made significant strides in implementing the new minimum wage, signaling its commitment to workers’ welfare and state development. In a decisive move, Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori directed the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, and the Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, to engage with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to discuss the wage implementation in the state.

This announcement came during a press briefing by the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, following the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting held at Government House, Asaba. Dr. Osuoza highlighted that discussions between the government and organized labor would focus on the consequential adjustments necessary for the new wage structure.

In a bid to enhance infrastructural development, the Delta State EXCO approved several key construction and rehabilitation projects. Among these are the reconstruction of the Ohoror-Bomadi Road and the construction of the Olomoro-Igbide Road, along with the Emevor-Ivrogbo-Orogun Road Phase 2, Otekpo Road in Ellu, and several others across various local government areas.

Reconstruction of Ohoror-Bomadi Road, Construction of Olomoro-Igbide Road, Rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of NNPC Housing Complex Road, Uvwie LGA,Internal road developments in Kurutie and other local areas

Further demonstrating its dedication to public welfare, the state government approved a substantial N3.55 billion as counterpart funding for the 2024 Universal Basic Education Programme. This funding underscores the state’s focus on improving educational infrastructure and access.

On the healthcare front, the EXCO approved the purchase of two state-of-the-art Computerized Tomography (CT) scanning machines for Central Hospital, Warri, and Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara. These machines are crucial for diagnosing diseases and internal injuries, ensuring that residents have access to advanced medical care.

The state also approved the renovation of over 150 primary health centers (PHCs) across Delta State, a move that is expected to significantly enhance the delivery of primary healthcare services.

Governor Oborevwori expressed concern over the prevailing economic challenges in the country. He directed the Commissioner for Agriculture and the Chief Job Creation Officer to develop programs aimed at alleviating these hardships, with a particular focus on youth empowerment and job creation.

With these sweeping approvals and initiatives, the Delta State Government under Governor Oborevwori’s leadership continues to prioritize infrastructural development, workers’ welfare, education, and healthcare. These efforts are expected to catalyze economic growth and improve the quality of life for all Deltans.
