In a historic show of unity, the three senators representing Delta State in the National Assembly—Senators Ede Dafinone (Delta Central), Ned Nwoko (Delta North), and Joel-Thomas Onowakpo (Delta South)—have thrown their weight behind the creation of Anioma State.

The movement for Anioma State, spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko of Delta North, has gained momentum as lawmakers emphasize equity, progress, and regional development. During a session on October 24, 2024, Senator Joel-Thomas Onowakpo highlighted the transformative potential of Anioma State, describing it as a solution to the imbalance in the South-East geopolitical zone while fostering a truly representative Delta State.

Senator Ede Dafinone echoed these sentiments, framing the agitation as a pivotal step toward achieving fairness and sustainable growth. In a statement, Dafinone noted that the creation of Anioma State could pave the way for a “true Delta State,” with its capital located in Delta Central, ensuring equitable development across all regions.

“For the Urhobo nation, the largest ethnic group in Delta State with over 10 million people and a strong presence across eight local government areas in Delta Central and parts of Delta South and Bayelsa, this discussion is of great significance,” Dafinone remarked.

He said that while the Urhobo people possess the resources and qualifications to demand their own state, they remain steadfast supporters of the Anioma cause. “This solidarity reflects the unity and mutual respect that have defined Delta State since its creation in 1991,” he added.

Dafinone further elaborated on the collective vision of a “true Delta State,” emphasizing inclusivity and progress. “By advocating for Anioma State, we are not just reshaping borders but committing to equity, sustainable development, and a future where every ethnic group thrives,” he said.

The senators’ unified stance represents a major milestone in the push for Anioma State, a cause deeply rooted in fairness and a shared desire for regional advancement. With this renewed momentum, advocates hope the Anioma State creation bill will gain the legislative and executive support needed to become a reality.

Observers believe this rare consensus among Delta’s representatives could galvanize other lawmakers and stakeholders, making Anioma State a symbol of equitable representation and sustainable growth in Nigeria.

The renewed call for Anioma State resonates across Delta State and beyond, as it promises to redefine the region’s identity while addressing the aspirations of its diverse ethnic groups.
