  • A statewide inspection has begun to assess infrastructure and identify areas for upgrades.
  • The government pledged improved internet access, data services and structural renovations.
  • Library management was encouraged to seek partnerships for book donations and resource expansion.
  • Officials were directed to preserve Delta State government publications and gazettes for research and public reference.

Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, disclosed this during an inspection of the Delta State Library headquarters and its branch near the Grand Hotel axis in Asaba.

He said the visits were designed to assess existing infrastructure, identify operational gaps and develop a framework for comprehensive upgrades across the state.

The exercise marked the beginning of a statewide inspection and monitoring programme aimed at repositioning public libraries as modern centres of knowledge, learning and research, with improved facilities and greater access to digital resources.

Tonukari said the initiative reflected the commitment of the Delta State Government to strengthening public access to information and ensuring that libraries remain relevant to students, researchers and the wider public in an increasingly technology-driven world.

At the headquarters of the state’s foremost e-library, the commissioner was conducted around the facility by the Director of the Delta State Library Board, Mrs Ediri Irikefe, and the Director of ICT, Mr Remy Edozie, who briefed him on the library’s operations and key challenges.

The officials commended the state government for its support, including the recent procurement of laptops to enhance operational capacity, while highlighting areas requiring further intervention.

Responding, Tonukari urged the library management to explore partnerships with private organisations, philanthropists and other stakeholders to attract book donations and expand available resources.

He also directed that important Delta State Government publications and official gazettes be properly preserved and archived for public reference and future research.

The commissioner assured the management of improved internet connectivity, enhanced data services and necessary structural upgrades to strengthen the facility’s effectiveness and improve the experience of users.

At the State Library branch, Tonukari acknowledged the need to replace obsolete systems and assured staff that efforts would be made to provide modern equipment and create a more conducive environment for learning and research.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Higher Education, Mrs Felicia Rone-Orugboh, urged library personnel to demonstrate greater commitment, initiative and professionalism in the discharge of their responsibilities, stressing the importance of taking appropriate action without always waiting for government directives.

The inspection team included senior management officials of the ministry, among them the Director of Remedial Services, Mrs Stella Maidoh.
