The Defence Headquarters has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of retired military personnel, assuring veterans that pension adjustments tied to the recently approved salary increase for serving personnel are being processed through the appropriate statutory channels.
The assurance was given on Tuesday, during a one-day strategic retreat between the Defence Headquarters and leaders of various vyeterans’ associations held at the Army Headquarters Command Mess 1 in Asokoro, Abuja.
The retreat, organised in collaboration with the Retired Army, Navy and Air Force Officers’ Association of Nigeria (RANAO), is aimed at strengthening collaboration with veterans and addressing issues affecting retired personnel.
Representing the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Defence Operations, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, said the Defence Headquarters remains committed to maintaining regular engagement with military veterans, describing dialogue as the most effective way to resolve concerns raised by retired service members.

He said the welfare of veterans remains one of the top priorities of the Defence Headquarters under the current leadership, adding that efforts are ongoing to ensure the implementation of the recently approved salary increase and the corresponding pension review.
Abdussalam also commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as his commitment to the welfare of members of the military, while urging veterans to remain patient as the necessary processes are completed.
He assured the retired officers that the military high command would continue to pursue improved healthcare services, prompt pension payments and enhanced welfare packages for former service personnel.
The retreat also highlighted the need for stronger cooperation among military veterans’ associations and encouraged retired personnel to continue contributing to national development by mentoring younger generations and supporting initiatives that promote national unity and security.
The Defence Headquarters said the engagement reflects its resolve to sustain a productive relationship with veterans while recognising their sacrifices and continued role in nation-building.
