A High Court in Lagos on Tuesday ordered that a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, Andrew Ominnikoron, who allegedly murdered 21-year-old Bamise Ayanwola, be remanded in a correctional centre.

Reports say that the Lagos State Government charged Ominnikoron with four counts bordering on conspiracy, murder and rape.

Justice Sherifat Sonaike ordered that the defendant be remanded in the Nigerian Correction Service in Ikoyi.

Sonaike adjourned the case until May 9 for trial. The Trumpet gathered.

Earlier, the Director for Public Prosecutions (DPP), Dr Jide Martins, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on November 25, 2021, and February 26, 2022, at Lekki Conservation Centre, Lekki-Ajah Expressway and Carter Bridge, Lagos.

The DPP said that on Feb. 26, the defendant conspired with others still at large and killed a 22-year-old BRT passenger and threw her out of a moving bus.

He said that the defendant also raped the passenger.

The offence, he said, contravenes the provisions of sections 165, 223, 260 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Martins said: “In view of the defendant’s plea, we will be asking for a date for trial and for the defendant to be further remanded at the correctional centre.”

Recall that on March 11, a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court had remanded the defendant pending DPP’s legal advice.

The magistrate had remanded him after an application for his remand was brought before the court.

Daddy Freeze explains walk out at Alex Ekubo’s service of songs By Omotayo Edubi Media personality Daddy Freeze has revealed why he left the service of songs held in honour of late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo, saying he expected the gathering to be more focused on mourning and celebrating the actor’s life. In a video making the rounds online, Daddy Freeze said he attended the event expecting a solemn atmosphere where family members and loved ones would share memories of the deceased. He expressed surprise at some parts of the programme, especially the continued worship sessions after the actor’s passing. “Nathaniel Bassey said they were supposed to go and pray for Alex on Tuesday, but he died on Monday. They still went on Tuesday and still sang and prayed. "I’m like, really? What happened to the miracles and healings you share on your platforms?” he questioned. The media personality also criticised the emphasis on sermons and speeches, saying he would have preferred hearing more from Alex Ekubo’s family, including his siblings and relatives. According to him, he stayed through some parts of the event but eventually decided to leave when the programme took a different turn. Ashimolowo defends Adeboye despite public criticism His comments have since sparked reactions online, with some Nigerians agreeing that memorial services should remain centred on the deceased and their family, while others argued that worship and praise are acceptable ways to honour the departed.
