The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has pledged to strengthen legislative efforts to tackle insecurity across the country through closer collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Interior.

The commitment was made by the Chairman of the Conference, Emomotimi Guwor, when he led a delegation of speakers of state Houses of Assembly on a courtesy visit to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in Abuja.

Guwor, the speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, said the meeting is aimed at aligning federal internal security policies with legislative actions at the state level, noting that state assemblies have a crucial role in enacting, domesticating and overseeing laws that support the Ministry’s mandate.

According to him, the discussions focused on enhancing collaboration between the ministry and state legislatures to advance federal initiatives at the grassroots.

“We had a fruitful discussion on how state legislatures can better interface with the Ministry to support federal initiatives at the grassroots,” Guwor said.

He stressed the need for stronger and coordinated efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges, emphasizing that improved security remains fundamental to national peace, stability and economic development.

“Our shared goal is national development, peace and improved welfare for Nigerians,” he said.

Guwor added that the visit underscored the speakers’ commitment to deepening legislative-federal cooperation in areas relating to internal security, immigration, correctional services, civil defence and other responsibilities under the Ministry of Interior.

Responding, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, commended the speakers for their proactive engagement and pledged the ministry’s readiness to sustain collaboration with state legislatures.

He assured the delegation of the ministry’s commitment to regular dialogue, information and data sharing, as well as joint oversight of federal facilities located across the states.

Both parties agreed to establish formal channels of collaboration to strengthen citizen-focused programmes and reinforce efforts to improve internal security nationwide.

The meeting saw both sides reaffirming their commitment to constitutional democracy, effective intergovernmental cooperation and collective action to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
