Speaking during an interview, Amachree stated that all available evidence gathered by investigators at the time pointed to natural causes rather than assassination or poisoning.
General Sani Abacha, who ruled Nigeria as military Head of State from 1993 until his death on June 8, 1998, died unexpectedly, triggering widespread speculation and numerous conspiracy theories. Among the most persistent claims was that the former leader had been poisoned.

According to him, a woman who was reportedly with Abacha shortly before his death was questioned extensively during the investigation and provided what he described as the only direct eyewitness account of the events leading up to the former ruler’s final moments.
The former DSS official revealed that the woman immediately denied any involvement in Abacha’s death when she was interviewed by investigators. He added that her testimony was found to be credible and consistent with other findings obtained during the probe.
Amachree explained that based on the witness account and other evidence reviewed, investigators concluded that Abacha suffered a fatal heart attack.
He further noted that the woman reportedly did not initially realize anything unusual had occurred until it later became apparent that the former military ruler had died.
