Caraxes in House of the Dragon has emerged as one of the series’ most distinctive and memorable dragons. Known as the Blood Wyrm, Caraxes is recognised for his long, lean, serpentine body, deep crimson scales, high-pitched screech and fierce temperament. His characteristics also mirror those of his rider, Prince Daemon Targaryen, played by Matt Smith.
First claimed by Prince Aemon Targaryen decades earlier, Caraxes became Daemon’s mount by 105 AC and remained closely associated with the Rogue Prince throughout the series.

Caraxes in House of the Dragon Season 1
Caraxes first appears early in Season 1 as Daemon Targaryen’s constant companion. Viewers see the dragon when Daemon flies out of King’s Landing following his banishment, carrying Mysaria.
His arrival immediately establishes the power and defiance associated with Daemon’s character.
One of Caraxes’ early memorable moments comes at Dragonstone, where his sudden appearance and piercing shrieks intimidate Otto Hightower and his men.
Caraxes also plays a major role in the War for the Stepstones. During the campaign, he burns enemy forces, supports Daemon in ground combat and demonstrates the effectiveness of an experienced dragon-rider partnership.
The season also features quieter moments that help establish the bond between Daemon and Caraxes. In one scene, Daemon summons the dragon to reinforce his authority and remind the Kingsguard of their oaths.
By the end of Season 1, as the Dance of the Dragons begins to take shape, Caraxes has become one of the Blacks’ most important and dangerous assets.
Caraxes in House of the Dragon Season 2
In Season 2, Caraxes takes on a more strategic role.
Daemon flies Caraxes from Dragonstone to Harrenhal, with the dragon landing dramatically on Kingspyre Tower during a storm. The sequence establishes the dragon’s imposing presence while highlighting Daemon’s attempt to seize control of the strategically important castle.
During Daemon’s time in the Riverlands, Caraxes becomes both a weapon and a psychological tool.
Daemon uses the dragon to intimidate local lords, including during his confrontation with the Brackens near Stone Hedge. Caraxes is also frequently seen near Harrenhal’s godswood, providing a brooding presence throughout Daemon’s increasingly troubled storyline.
The dragon’s reactions to other dragons, including Syrax and Seasmoke, further demonstrate the awareness and hierarchy among the creatures.
Although dragons such as Vhagar command attention because of their enormous size, Caraxes remains one of the most experienced and battle-ready dragons available to the Blacks.
Caraxes in House of the Dragon Season 3
Season 3 gives Caraxes a more prominent combat role as the Dance of the Dragons escalates.
The Blood Wyrm becomes closely involved in Daemon’s military campaigns in the Riverlands and beyond. Among his notable moments are his involvement with Rivermen forces at the Battle at the Red Fork, where he attacks Westermen soldiers.
Caraxes also features in quieter scenes. These include drinking from a lake while Daemon parts ways with Alys Rivers and nuzzling Syrax at Dragonstone before a major flight.
The dragon also flies with other Black dragons, including Vermithor and Silverwing, as the conflict moves towards major objectives.
Another significant encounter involves the wild dragon Sheepstealer. Caraxes is ordered to attack and severely mauls the larger dragon, demonstrating his aggression and combat ability.
At the Battle of Tumbleton, Daemon initially keeps Caraxes in reserve before unleashing him against the town’s main gate, helping Black forces enter the settlement.
