A Brazilian investor, Roberto Fonseca Janete da Fonseca, has expressed interest in investing across cattle and beef value chain in Delta State, commending Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for creating opportunities that have attracted international investors.

Speaking at the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit 2026, Fonseca credited Governor Oborevwori’s visit to Brazil last year for opening discussions that culminated in his delegation’s visit to Delta State.

“By invitation of Governor Sheriff, who came to Brazil last year, we thank you very much for your visit. We came to this occasion to contribute our experience, how Brazil became such a large producer and exporter of beef and how we could transfer that technology and experience to this country, Delta State, and to Nigeria,” he said.

Fonseca said Nigeria possesses the same climatic conditions that enabled Brazil to become the world’s largest cattle and beef producer, noting that with strategic investment, Delta State could become a major hub for livestock production.

Comparing both countries, he said Brazil has about 200 million head of cattle for 200 million people, while Nigeria has an estimated 20 million, stressing the need to improve cattle breeding, productivity and sustainability.

He noted that developing the sector requires investment beyond livestock production to include slaughterhouses, beef processing plants, cold storage facilities, refrigerated transportation and efficient distribution networks.

“We are ready to invest in Delta State through a joint venture covering the entire value chain, from cattle breeding to distribution, while helping to lower prices for consumers,” the Brazilian added.

Fonseca also described Nigeria’s beef market as largely untapped, noting that annual per capita beef consumption stands at about six kilograms, compared to 30 kilograms in Brazil, presenting significant opportunities for growth.

He added that a stronger and more efficient livestock value chain would reduce production costs, make beef more affordable and position Nigeria to serve regional export markets.

“If you develop a strong and sustainable production chain in this country, you will not only provide affordable beef for the Nigerian population, but you could also export to neighbouring countries,” he said.

Reaffirming his commitment, Fonseca said his company is ready to partner with Delta State to build a modern livestock industry that will create jobs, strengthen food security and accelerate economic growth.
