A wave of outrage has swept across Nigeria’s social media space following the circulation of a controversial video allegedly released by armed bandits operating in the North-West, raising fresh concerns about the country’s security situation.

The nearly two-minute clip, reportedly shared by online commentator Somto Okonkwo, shows heavily armed men displaying rifles and ammunition while openly challenging recent claims by security forces.

In the footage, the group dismisses official reports that several of their top commanders were neutralised. They named individuals such as Ilani, Bakin Si Bindi, and Ilia Mai Raja, insisting they remain alive and present in the video.

The bandits also taunted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Dauda Lawal, alleging that government troops fled during recent confrontations and abandoned weapons now in their possession.

These claims appear to contradict earlier statements by the Nigerian Army, which announced the killing of dozens of bandits during operations in Zamfara State on April 5.

The emergence of the video has deepened public frustration over persistent insecurity in northern Nigeria, where banditry continues to disrupt communities through kidnappings, cattle rustling, and links to extremist networks.

Reactions on X have been swift and divided. While some users questioned the credibility of official military reports, others criticised the boldness of the bandits in revealing their identities and weaponry without apparent fear.

Several commentators raised concerns about the alleged loss or recovery of military-grade weapons and whether intelligence and surveillance systems are being effectively deployed.

Others called for the use of advanced technology to track and dismantle criminal groups, stressing the need for accountability and transparency in security operations.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the military or other security agencies addressing the video or the claims made within it.
