Atletico Madrid have stepped up their efforts to sign Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, with talks already held over a potential move for the Argentina international.
Romero is expected to leave Spurs this summer despite signing a new four-year contract with the club last August.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone is a long-term admirer of the 28-year-old defender and is now pushing for another attempt to bring him to Madrid.
Tottenham are aware of Atletico’s interest, while an agreement on personal terms is not expected to pose a major obstacle if negotiations progress.
Romero has also attracted interest from Inter Milan following his impressive involvement at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he featured in all seven of Argentina’s matches as they reached the final before losing to Spain.

His potential departure would represent a significant change for Tottenham, with Romero having become one of the club’s key figures since arriving from Atalanta in 2021, initially on loan before completing a permanent transfer the following year.
The centre-back endured an injury-hit end to last season after suffering a knee problem, while he was also sent off twice during a difficult campaign for Spurs.
Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation, finishing 17th in the Premier League.
New head coach Roberto De Zerbi has already indicated that he would respect the wishes of players who want to leave, potentially paving the way for Romero’s departure if Atletico can reach an agreement with Spurs.
Meanwhile, Tottenham are working to secure the future of another central defender, with Micky van de Ven reportedly close to agreeing a new five-year contract.
The developments leave Romero’s future increasingly uncertain as Atletico continue their pursuit of the Tottenham captain.
