Founder of Omega Power Ministries, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, has renewed his long-standing call for the scrapping of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), sparking fresh debate across Nigeria’s education sector.

His comments come as candidates across the country continue to sit for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which is scheduled to end on April 25.

In a viral Facebook post, the cleric stated that he has consistently advocated for the removal of JAMB for over eight years.

According to him, Nigeria’s requirement for students to sit for JAMB before gaining admission into tertiary institutions is unnecessary and differs from admission systems in many developed countries.

Chinyere argued that in nations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, students can secure university admission using their secondary school results without an additional centralized exam.

He cited his ministry’s scholarship programme as an example, noting that for over 16 years, beneficiaries sent abroad only needed their West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE) results, issued by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), and proof of school fee payment to gain admission.

“OPM Church for more than 16 years have been sending students on scholarship to the USA, UK, Poland, Cyprus, Canada, Ghana, and Cotonou.

“In the above developed countries, all they needed to give my students admission into university was WAEC and school fees,” he wrote.

His remarks have triggered mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians agreeing that the current system places unnecessary pressure on students, while others argue that JAMB helps standardize admissions and maintain fairness across institutions.
