Former Big Brother Naija housemate Angel Smith has sparked controversy online after reacting to the pregnancy announcement made by Nollywood actor Baba Ijesha and his partner, Luminee.
Key highlight:
- Former Angel Smith sparked controversy after criticizing the pregnancy announcement of Baba Ijesha and his partner Luminee.
- Angel questioned the decision to have a child with someone previously convicted in a child-related sexual offence case, prompting intense debate on social media.
- Her comments divided Nigerians, with some supporting her concerns about accountability, while others accused her of being judgmental during what they viewed as a private family celebration.
- Responding to criticism, Angel stood by her position and stated, “I rather be a gay, promiscuous woman which I am, than be like any of you,” triggering further online reactions.
- The controversy reignited discussions about forgiveness, accountability, public scrutiny, and the lasting impact of Baba Ijesha‘s 2022 conviction and subsequent release from prison in 2025.
The couple recently announced the birth of their first child, which received congratulatory messages from some fans and criticism from others due to Baba Ijesha’s past legal issues involving a child abuse case.
Reacting to the announcement, Angel questioned the decision of a woman choosing to have a child with someone who had been convicted in connection with a child-related offence.
She said: “I rather be a gay, promiscuous woman which I am, than be like any of you.” ultimately doubling down on her position on the matter and affirming her sexuality.
Her comment quickly went viral, with X users divided over her opinion.
While some Nigerians agreed that the issue deserved public scrutiny, others accused the reality star of being judgmental and attacking the couple during what should have been a personal moment.
One X user, @Tigersglory, wrote, “See this all-round failure criticising another person.. failed at dating men, failed at being a lesbian.. it’s like she doesn’t know tit’s is a 14yrs sentence jail term… mugu.”
Another user, @Magret4sure, disagreed, saying:
“Having an opinion is fine, but sometimes timing and delivery matter. A baby announcement wasn’t the place for this conversation.”
A third commenter, @nuellaunas, added, “People will always debate accountability and forgiveness, but dragging a newborn into adult issues is where many draw the line.”
The criticism led Angel to respond to some of the comments directed at her. She doubled down on her stance, stating:
“I rather be a gay, promiscuous woman which I am, than be like any of you.”

Her response sparked another wave of reactions, with some focusing on her mention of her sexuality, while others argued that the discussion should remain focused on her original point.
Another X user, @annieuduak, commented, “She stood her ground, but the conversation has now moved from the issue to personal attacks.”
@Gab_olas defended her, stating, “Angel has always been outspoken. Agree or disagree, she’s expressing her view.”
Baba Ijesha (Olanrewaju James) was convicted in July 2022 by a Lagos High Court for indecent treatment of a child and sexual assault of a minor.
A viral 2021 video showed him in compromising acts with a 14-year-old girl (foster daughter of the actress Princess). He was found guilty on four counts, sentenced to concurrent terms (effectively around five years), and acquitted on penetration charges.
The Court of Appeal in 2024 acquitted him of some older counts but upheld others from 2021. He served his sentence and was released in November 2025. He has maintained his innocence.
That forms the basis for the criticism in the thread.
The controversy continues to generate discussions online, with Nigerians debating forgiveness, public opinion, accountability, and whether celebrities should comment on sensitive personal matters.
