Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Akon Eyakenyi, has reaffirmed the state government’s zero-tolerance for illegal immigration, assuring the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) that Akwa Ibom is not a haven for undocumented migrants.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by a UNHCR delegation at the Government House, Uyo, Eyakenyi emphasized that while the state welcomes foreigners engaged in legitimate businesses with valid documentation, it will not tolerate individuals who enter illegally or engage in activities that threaten public peace and security.

She noted that the administration’s promotes inclusiveness and equal access to social services, ensuring that all residents, regardless of origin, can benefit from essential amenities such as education, healthcare, and social welfare programmes.
According to the deputy governor, migration is a natural phenomenon, but it must be carried out through legal channels and accompanied by responsible conduct.
“While people will always migrate into nations, states, and communities, what is important is coming in the right way and being determined to be of good behaviour,” she stated.
Eyakenyi maintained that legally recognized refugees and immigrants can contribute meaningfully to society through productive economic activities when properly integrated.
However, she stressed that the government remains firmly opposed to illegal migration and criminal activities.
“What the government will always contend with are illegal immigrants with ill intentions. We will not tolerate disruptive immigrants who come to cause havoc and destruction,” she said.
She revealed that the Nigerian Immigration Service recently informed her office that 46 illegal immigrants had been arrested and repatriated to their respective countries within the last two months.

The deputy governor called for sustained collaboration among security agencies, development partners, and the UNHCR to strengthen efforts against illegal migration and preserve peace in communities across the state.
“Your office must continue to partner with relevant authorities to ensure compliance. My office will continue to partner and support UNHCR to ensure a better society for all,” she added.
Earlier, the outgoing Head of UNHCR Sub-Office, Irene Omondi, explained that the visit is aimed at discussing issues related to irregular migration and introducing her successor, who will assume leadership of the office.
Omondi expressed appreciation to the deputy governor and the Akwa Ibom State government for their consistent support and collaboration, particularly through the Ministry of Women Affairs.
She appealed for the same level of cooperation to be extended to the incoming station head.
In his remarks, the incoming Head of the UNHCR Sub-Office, Alpha Oumar Barry, thanked the deputy governor for her guidance and support, describing them as instrumental to the agency’s work.
He pledged continued partnership with the state government to promote the safety and well-being of both host communities and migrants.
