The Adamawa State Police Command has secured the conviction of an 18-year-old suspected Shilla gang member, Suddais Shuaibu, popularly known as “Gafiya”, who was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment without the option of a fine by Chief Magistrate Court II in Yola.

The conviction followed his prosecution by the Commissioner of Police through prosecuting counsel, Inspector Kabiru Abubakar, on three separate First Information Reports (FIRs) involving theft, criminal conspiracy, extortion and receiving stolen property, contrary to the provisions of the Adamawa State Penal Code Law, 2018.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered Shuaibu to pay N527,000 as compensation to victims affected by his criminal activities.

According to the Adamawa State Police PPRO Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje in a statement on Friday, the court imposed two years imprisonment for theft, one year for criminal conspiracy, seven years for extortion relating to the first and second FIRs, and another two years for theft in the third case. All sentences are to run concurrently, resulting in an effective 12-year jail term without the option of a fine.

Police investigations revealed that on June 10, 2026, the convict allegedly broke into the residence of Fatima Magaji on Ajiya Street in Jimeta, Yola North Local Government Area, where he stole an Infinix Smart 10 mobile phone valued at N125,000, a Tecno phone worth N30,000 and an MP3 player valued at N3,000.

Further investigations showed that on June 27, 2026, Shuaibu and other suspected gang members, who are still at large, allegedly attacked Usama Suleiman of Jambutu Ward, Yola North LGA, and forcefully stole a Samsung Galaxy phone valued at N170,000 and a power bank worth N20,000.

The police said the suspect was identified at the scene, arrested and later confessed to the crime. During interrogation, he reportedly implicated another suspect identified as Adamu Mahmud, also known as “Lakulaku”, who remains at large.

Reacting to the conviction, the Commissioner of Police described the judgment as a strong warning to criminal elements operating in the state, stressing that the command remains committed to ensuring offenders are brought to justice.

He also reassured residents that the ongoing crackdown on violent crimes, gang activities and other criminal offences would continue, while urging members of the public to support security agencies with credible and timely information to aid crime prevention and law enforcement.

The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Adamawa State Command.
