The bill, which amends the Adamawa State Chiefs (Appointment and Deposition) (Amendment) Law, 2024, was passed on Monday, following the consideration and adoption of a report presented by the House Standing Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The committee, chaired by Kefas Calvin, representing Toungo Constituency, recommended the amendment to make provisions for gratuity and death benefits for traditional rulers in the state.
Calvin commended Governor Ahmadu Fintiri for sponsoring the bill, describing the amendment as a significant step towards strengthening the welfare of emirs and chiefs.
He said the amendment would provide appropriate benefits to traditional rulers and their families while recognising their contributions to the state.
Assembly Leadership Backs The Bill
Also speaking during consideration of the committeeu2019s report, the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Muhammed Jidjiwa, representing Jada Mbula Constituency, commended the committee for its work.
Jidjiwa stressed the importance of traditional institutions, noting that they preserve the culture, norms and values of society.
He urged lawmakers to support the adoption of the report in the interest of traditional rulers and their families, while also commending Governor Fintiri for initiating the amendment. The bill builds on an amendment process the Assembly opened up for public hearing last year.

Bill Passed With Support Of Lawmakers
The Majority Leader of the Assembly, Kate Mamuno, representing Demsa Constituency, moved the motion for the passage of the bill.
The motion was seconded by Musa Kallamu, representing Mayo-Belwa Constituency, paving the way for the passage of the bill.
The development is expected to establish a formal framework for the payment of gratuity and death benefits to eligible traditional rulers in Adamawa State.
