Nigerians seeking to renew or obtain an international passport will face a sharp increase in costs starting September 1, 2025. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a 100 percent hike in passport fees, sparking nationwide debate and concern among citizens preparing for travel.
Under the new directive, the 32-page passport with a 5-year validity period will now cost N100,000, up from the previous N50,000. Similarly, the 64-page passport with a 10-year validity, currently priced at N100,000, will now be issued at N200,000.
The sudden adjustment is expected to affect millions of Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora who depend on the document for international travel, study, and business. Many citizens have taken to social media to express frustration over the timing and steep nature of the increment.

While the NIS has yet to fully explain the reasons for the price surge, analysts believe it may be linked to rising administrative costs and the government’s effort to generate more revenue. The announcement has also raised concerns about accessibility, as the new rates could make international travel more difficult for low- and middle-income Nigerians.
The new passport fees will officially take effect nationwide on September 1, 2025.
