Teachers in Delta State have elected new executives to pilot the affairs of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) for the next four years, amid assurances from Governor Sheriff Oborevwori that his administration remains committed to their welfare and the growth of education in the state.

The election, which formed part of the 9th delegates quadrennial conference of the NUT held at the Government College, Ughelli on Monday, saw delegates from across the state participate in what union leaders described as a free, fair, and credible process.

Represented by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, Gov. Oborevwori said teachers occupy a central place in nation building and deserve adequate motivation.

“My government values your roles and is committed to your welfare and the growth of education in Delta State.

“Motivated teachers help students to learn better in our society today, and that is why we have employed over 2,000 teachers, improved school buildings, approved short-term promotions, and enhanced working conditions,” the governor said.

He urged teachers to continue upgrading their skills to meet the demands of a fast-changing world, adding that “we will keep supporting innovation, research, and entrepreneurship to prepare our students for the future.”

At the end of the polls, presided over by Samuel Iyang as returning officer, new executives emerged for the union.

Only four positions, chairman, 2nd vice chairman, treasurer, and 2nd internal auditor, were contested, while candidates for all other offices were returned unopposed.

Those elected are Dickson Poubeni, chairman; Arimokwu Isaac, deputy chairman; Arusuayine Diana, 1st vice chairman; Ovhorokpa Eseoghene, 2nd vice chairman; Apene Brigth, 3rd vice chairman, and Nwanchukwu Chinedu, 4th vice chairman.

Earlier, the outgoing state Chairman of NUT, Comrade Titus Okotie, said the conference with the theme: “Motivation of teachers: A panacea for improving educational standards” was deliberately chosen to emphasize the need for greater attention to teachers’ welfare.

He listed among his achievements the implementation of the service extension for teachers, facelift of the NUT secretariat, and sustained training of union officials.

He commended the cordial relationship between the union and the state government, stressing that dialogue has been the union’s approach in resolving issues affecting teachers.

The newly elected state Chairman, Comrade Dicksom Poubeni, in his acceptance remarks, pledged to consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor while prioritizing teachers’ welfare.

“Our victory today is not for one person but for all teachers in Delta State. We will work tirelessly to ensure that the confidence reposed in us is not betrayed.

“I assure you of an administration that will be inclusive, transparent, and committed to the growth of education in our state,” he said.
