First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has appealed for more support for refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across the nation.
In her statement commemorating the annual World Refugee Day, observed every June 20, she reiterated the significance of community support in fostering resilience among those displaced by conflict, persecution, and natural disasters.
Highlighting the remarkable strength and resilience exhibited by refugees worldwide, Mrs. Tinubu said that “across Nigeria and beyond, refugees exemplify extraordinary courage in the face of adversity.
“Yet, it is often the compassion of neighbours, the welcoming embrace of strangers, and the solidarity of local communities that convert mere survival into genuine hope, transforming hope into a pathway to healing and stability.”
Mrs. Tinubu called for the construction of inclusive communities where refugees and IDPs are not only welcomed, but also genuinely embraced and supported.
However, she emphasized that it’s vital for refugees and IDPs to abide by the laws of their host communities and work diligently to contribute to the collective well-being.

This year’s World Refugee Day has the theme: “Community as a superpower,” shedding light on the significant role that communities play in safeguarding the rights and lives of vulnerable populations.
The observance, first initiated in 2001 to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1951 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, serves as a reminder of global humanitarian commitments.
In recognition of the first lady’s dedicated efforts and maternal advocacy for displaced persons within Nigeria, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) took a significant step on June 14 by renaming a resettlement city in Nasarawa State in her honour.
The resettlement city, which currently shelters approximately 40 households of displaced individuals and refugees, provides them with dignified accommodation and improved living conditions, offering a haven during tumultuous times.
So far, a total of 239 individuals have benefited from the allocations made within this programme, highlighting the positive impact of community initiatives aimed at supporting those affected by displacement.
Through collaborative efforts, the first lady’s message encourages Nigerians to continue advocating for the rights of refugees and IDPs, fostering an environment of empathy and hope that paves the way for their successful integration into society.
