Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has rolled out reforms targeting the civil service, pension system, and job creation aimed at repositioning the state and improving governance.

The governor reiterated his commitment on Thursday, during the 2025 Workers Day celebration at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.

Gov. Yusuf said the state has adopted a new minimum wage of N71,000, making it one of the first states in Nigeria to implement a substantial wage increase for civil servants, a step taken to enhance workers welfare.

The reforms he announced include, institutionalising regular training and capacity building through workshops and partnerships with institutions like ASCON, modernising administrative procedures, and reviewing key operational documents such as the civil service rules, financial instructions, and the scheme of service.

The governor further revealed the payment of N16 billion in outstanding pension arrears, the upward review of the minimum pension from N5,000 to N20,000, and the release of N100 million to support pensioners’ activities.

“Pension reform is not just an administrative task; it is a moral duty to those who served with honour,” he said.

Gov. Yusuf also announced the creation of new ministries and agencies designed to improve service delivery and generate employment.

These include the ministries of housing development, internal security, solid minerals, and power and renewable energy, along with new agencies like the Kano State ICT Development Agency and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency.

He further reiterated his administration’s commitment to urban renewal, citing the ongoing construction of flyovers, road expansions, improved drainage systems, and the installation of streetlights, revamping the education sector and improving security.

“While economic hardship poses challenges, it also offers opportunities for resilience, innovation, and solidarity.

“Let us rededicate ourselves to the ideals of patriotism, productivity, and public service,” he added.

Kano State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kabiru Inuwa, commended the governor for the settlement of outstanding arrears and pensions benefits amounting to N16 billion.

He also requested the governor to consider absorbing casual staff working in various ministries and departments in the state.
