Chairman of the Niger Delta Basin Development Authority (NDBDA), Chief Bosin Ebikeme, has commended President Bola Tinubu, for signing into law the bill establishing the Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State into law.

He described the development as a landmark achievement that reflects the president’s commitment to the growth of the Niger Delta and his care for its people.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Chief Ebikeme expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for what he termed a “historic decision,” adding that the signing of the bill represents a new chapter of progress and opportunity for the region.

Chief Ebikeme praised Senator Joel Onowakpo for reintroducing the bill in 2023, describing his efforts as instrumental in achieving this milestone.

He also commended the National Assembly for its collective support, with special recognition for Rep. Julius Pondi, the House of Representatives member from Burutu Federal Constituency, for his critical role.

Acknowledging contributions from notable leaders in the region, Chief Ebikeme thanked High Chief Government Ekpemupolo (popularly known as Tompolo) and Mr. Matthew Tonlagha for their dedication and resources in championing the establishment of the university for over a decade.

He also extended his gratitude to Ijaw national leader, Chief Edwin Clark and the Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Oboro-Gbaraun II, Aketekpe, Agadagba, for their guidance and support.

He noted the foundational efforts of Senator James Manager, who sponsored the bill during his tenure in the Senate.

The NDBDA chairman further appreciated the efforts of High Chief Godspower Gbenekama JP, the Fiyewei of Gbaramatu Kingdom, and the support of Deacon Kingsley Otuaro and Chief Fedude Zimughan, whose contributions, he said, were pivotal to the success of the project.

Chief Ebikeme described the establishment of the university as a victory for Gbaramatu Kingdom and a significant milestone for the entire Niger Delta.

“It symbolizes hope, growth, and the promise of a brighter future for our youth and communities,” he stated.

He concluded by thanking President Tinubu for delivering what he called a “tremendous gift to the people of the Niger Delta.”

The signing of the bill into law, which took place on Monday, January 27, 2025, marks a significant step in fostering education, development, and opportunities in the region.
