The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has condemned the suspension of all 18 local government chairmen in Edo State by the State House of Assembly, describing the move as a severe threat to democracy and local government autonomy.
In a strongly worded statement on Thursday, ALGON’s National Executive Council (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BOT) criticized the suspension, accusing the Assembly of disregarding due process and violating constitutional provisions.
Governor Monday Okpebholo had alleged that the suspended chairmen failed to submit financial records to the state government, prompting the Assembly’s action. However, ALGON’s National Publicity Secretary, Hamisu M. Anani, rejected the allegations, labeling the suspension “unconstitutional, null, and void.” He also argued that the affected chairmen were not given a fair chance to defend themselves.
“The suspension undermines the autonomy of local governments as upheld by a Supreme Court ruling,” ALGON stated. “We urge Governor Okpebholo and the State House of Assembly to immediately reverse this decision to restore democratic governance and uphold the rule of law.”

The controversial decision has drawn widespread criticism from legal experts, civil society organizations, and political stakeholders across the country. Many have denounced the move as a blatant affront to the constitutional provisions safeguarding local government independence.
ALGON has also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene, describing his involvement as critical to preserving democratic principles. “The President must act swiftly to protect local government autonomy and halt this abuse of power in Edo State,” the statement added.
The suspension has sparked a national debate on the balance of power between state governments and local authorities. Observers warn that such actions set a dangerous precedent that could erode democratic values if left unchecked.
As the controversy deepens, pressure continues to mount on both state and federal authorities to reaffirm their commitment to constitutional governance and democratic ideals.
