In a major step towards implementing financial autonomy for Nigeria’s 774 local governments, Delta State’s Local Government Service Commission is set to begin a Physical Verification Exercise for all Unified Local Government Service and Local Government Education Authority/State Universal Basic Education Board (LEA/SUBEB) staff. The exercise is scheduled to start on Monday, November 4, and conclude on Friday, November 15.

The verification initiative, approved during the recent Joint Allocation Account Committee (JAAC) meeting held in Asaba on October 29 and led by Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, aims to ensure an accurate and transparent staff database. This move aligns with the Supreme Court’s ruling granting financial autonomy to local government councils across the nation.

According to the circular released by the Local Government Service Commission on October 30, the ICT unit of the Department of Planning, Research, and Statistics (DPRS) will handle the verification process across all 25 local government areas. Staff are required to bring the following documents: original and photocopies of appointment letters, last promotion letters, study leave/sponsorship approvals (if applicable), proof of name change (if applicable), a valid ID, and two recent passport photos.
