The Police Service Commission (PSC) has promoted 10 Commissioners of Police (CPs) to the rank of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs), as part of a wider promotion exercise covering more than 3,800 senior officers.

PSC Approves Promotion of 10 Senior Police Officers
The Police Service Commission announced the promotions following its plenary meeting in Abuja on October 29, 2026. The commission said the exercise covered more than 3,800 senior officers, including two officers elevated to Deputy Inspector-General and 10 CPs promoted to AIG.
The PSC said the promotions followed the officers’ performance in promotion examinations and oral interviews. The commission’s announcement was reported by Channels Television.
A separate Nigeria Police Force wireless message dated November 4 reportedly circulated the promotion notification to departments, commands, formations and units. The message reportedly said the promotions would take effect from September 10, 2026, and that publication in the official gazette and a Force Order would follow.

The wireless message reportedly directed that the commission’s congratulations be conveyed to the officers. The stated effective date and the pending formal notices relate to that separate communication.
Police Formations Receive Notification
The wireless message was reportedly circulated to senior departments and formations of the Nigeria Police Force, including operations, legal services, training, research and planning, information and communication technology, the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Police Mobile Force, INTERPOL, Maritime Police and Air Wing.
The promotions advance the officers within the senior leadership structure of the Nigeria Police Force. The PSC’s public announcement also said the promotion exercise included officers elevated to other ranks.
