The Federal Government has commenced construction of a 132/33kV electricity transmission substation with a capacity of 120 megavolt-amperes (MVA) in Mashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, in a move aimed at strengthening electricity transmission and supporting economic activities across the state and neighbouring communities.

The project, being executed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), is scheduled for completion in March 2027 and is expected to improve the network’s capacity to deliver available electricity to homes, businesses and industries.

FG Begins Construction of 120MVA Katsina Substation

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony in Mashi on Friday, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the project would enhance the transmission network’s ability to deliver available electricity to Katsina and its environs.

He explained that the facility would comprise two 60MVA transformers, providing a combined transmission capacity of 120MVA, equivalent to approximately 96 megawatts.

According to the minister, the substation would support farmers, traders, artisans and households by strengthening the electricity infrastructure needed for business operations and improved living conditions.

“The Federal Government, through the Transmission Company of Nigeria, is providing this new two-by-60MVA, 132/33kV transmission substation.

“On completion, it will provide 120MVA of transmission capacity. This will strengthen the network’s ability to deliver available electricity within Katsina and its environs, supporting productive activity and household welfare,” Tegbe said.

Tegbe Urges TCN to Meet March 2027 Deadline

The power minister commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting investments in the electricity sector, describing reliable power infrastructure as essential to the administration’s economic development agenda.

He said the project reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to creating the infrastructure needed to promote business growth, employment and economic prosperity.

Tegbe also disclosed that compensation issues associated with the project had been resolved. He urged TCN officials, the contractor and supervising engineers to maintain high standards and deliver the project within the approved timeframe.

“With completion scheduled for March 2027, our focus must be disciplined execution,” he said.

The minister called for strict quality control throughout the project, including design, equipment manufacturing, civil works, installation and testing.

He stressed that the substation must be completed on schedule without compromising safety or construction standards.

FG Appeals to Mashi Residents to Protect Substation

Tegbe appealed to residents of Mashi to cooperate with the project team, provide safe access to the construction site and protect the facility against vandalism.

He also urged community members to report suspicious activities during construction and after the substation becomes operational.

“To the people of Mashi, your partnership remains essential during construction and commissioning. Support safe access to the site and protect the substation. Guide this asset as your own home; it is your asset. The Federal Government is providing it for your use and for the benefit of generations to come,” he said.

Radda Commends Tinubu Over Katsina Power Projects

In his remarks, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda thanked President Tinubu for approving three transmission substation projects for the state.

Radda described the projects as important investments expected to improve electricity transmission and support economic development across Katsina.

He said his administration would continue to collaborate with the Federal Government on initiatives aimed at expanding economic opportunities and improving the welfare of residents.

The governor also highlighted the railway project linking Kano, Daura and Katsina, with a planned extension towards Maradi in the Niger Republic, as another infrastructure initiative expected to benefit the state.

Radda further referred to cooperation between the Federal Government and the Katsina State Government on an initiative intended to strengthen electricity generation in the locality.

He expressed hope that the power minister would return to the state for the commissioning of the hybrid power project and the completed transmission substations.

The governor also thanked Tegbe for visiting Katsina and supporting efforts to improve the state’s power infrastructure.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by officials of the Federal Ministry of Power, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Kano Electricity Distribution Company, the Katsina State Government, traditional rulers, local government officials and other stakeholders.
