The distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in Calabar, Cross River State, has recorded a low turnout, with few applicants visiting the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state capital to collect their cards.

Key Highlights

  • Low turnout recorded at INEC’s PVC collection in Calabar, Cross River State.
  • Collection runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. across the state’s 193 wards until October 15.
  • After October 15, collection moves to INEC’s 18 local government offices.
  • INEC says no significant challenges since the exercise began on October 9.
  • Some applicants complain of slow collection and names missing from the register.

While INEC officials were present at designated tables, some applicants complained that the collection process was too slow.

The Head of Voter Education and Publicity at the INEC office in Cross River State, Odaro Aisien, said the commission is fully prepared and that no significant challenges had been recorded since the exercise began on October 9.

Collection Schedule

He said the collection of PVCs would take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. across the state’s 193 wards until October 15, after which it would move to the 18 local government offices.

Aisien said the number of available PVCs would be disclosed later, and commended Cross River residents for recording the fourth- and fifth-highest numbers of completed registrations in the second and third phases of the INEC continuous voter registration exercise.

Applicants Report Mixed Experiences

Applicants reported mixed experiences. Mrs. Blessing Effiong said she waited for two hours and complained of delays, but maintained that she needed her PVC to vote.

John Okon called for more officials to speed up the process, while Michael Agbor described the collection as stressful but necessary.

Egbe Sampson said he experienced difficulty in obtaining his card after transferring his registration from Abi to Calabar, while James Ovat said his name could not be found on the register, possibly because he had registered in Obubra and again in Calabar to change his voting point.
