The Imo State chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has come under fire on social media after telling Nigerians to stop lamenting over economic hardship, arguing that inflation is a global problem and that fuel is cheaper in Nigeria than in some other countries.

The remarks have triggered angry reactions on X, with critics questioning the comparison in view of Nigeria’s crude oil resources, the ₦70,000 minimum wage cited by commenters and the rising cost of living facing millions of households.

Key Highlights

  • APC chairman faces backlash: Social media users have criticised the Imo State APC chairman over his comments on inflation and fuel prices.
  • Inflation comparison disputed: Critics argue that global inflation does not justify the economic hardship experienced by Nigerians.
  • Crude oil debate resurfaces: Commenters question why fuel remains expensive in an oil-producing country.
  • Minimum wage concerns: Some users say current wages are insufficient to meet basic needs amid rising prices.
  • Cost-of-living crisis: Reactions reflect public frustration over food, transportation, housing and other essential expenses.
  • Political accountability questioned: Critics argue that public officials should acknowledge citizens’ economic difficulties when defending government policies.

Imo APC Chairman’s Inflation Comments Spark Online Reactions

The controversy centres on the chairman’s argument that inflation is occurring around the world and that fuel is cheaper in Nigeria than in other countries.

The comments have prompted debate over whether comparisons with other economies adequately reflect the financial realities of Nigerians, particularly the relationship between fuel prices, wages and purchasing power.

An X user, @goswill_amen, questioned the distinction between defending government policies and recognising the difficulties facing ordinary citizens.

“This statement by the Imo State APC chairman raises an important question about the difference between defending government policies and acknowledging the economic difficulties ordinary Nigerians face,” the user wrote.

The commenter added that although inflation is a global phenomenon, that fact does not automatically make Nigeria’s economic situation acceptable.

According to the user, the more important question is whether Nigerians can afford basic necessities with their current incomes, rather than whether other countries are also experiencing inflation.

Nigerians Question Fuel Prices in an Oil-Producing Country

Some commenters focused on Nigeria’s crude oil resources, arguing that the country’s status as an oil producer should feature prominently in discussions about domestic fuel prices.

An X user, @goddy_daniel, criticised the chairman’s remarks, referring to Nigeria’s crude oil resources and the ₦70,000 minimum wage.

“God will punish you. We have the crude, why are we buying it expensive with 70k minimum wage…” the user wrote.

Similarly, @BOJAK argued that fuel should be cheaper in an oil-producing country.

“For an oil producing nation fuel is meant to be cheaper than what we are seeing now,” the commenter wrote.

The reactions highlight a recurring public debate over the relationship between Nigeria’s oil wealth, fuel costs and the purchasing power of its citizens.

However, domestic fuel prices are influenced by several factors, including crude oil costs, refining, distribution, exchange rates and government pricing policies. Being an oil-producing country does not, by itself, guarantee lower pump prices.

Critics Link Economic Hardship to APC’s Performance

Other users used the controversy to question the APC’s record in government and the benefits of its development policies.

An X user, @2WayV, criticised the party’s development record, writing: “Person Dey use broom campaign Village broom. Which kind development people Dey expect from APC me I no know.”

Another commenter, @AlligatorNGA, interpreted the chairman’s remarks as suggesting that Nigerians could face even greater hardship in the future.

“Fire & tests gold, suffering tests brave men. In other words, we never see anything yet. So, why should we vote you to continue giving us shege? Una own don finish,” the user wrote.

The comments reflect how discussions about fuel prices and inflation can quickly develop into broader arguments about political leadership, government performance and public confidence.

Minimum Wage and Purchasing Power Take Centre Stage

The adequacy of wages amid rising living costs was another major theme in the online reactions.

An X user identified as Emmy accused politicians of being disconnected from the financial struggles of ordinary Nigerians.

“He earns more than 5 million per month as a politician. He doesn’t care how you that earns 50k survive,” the user wrote.

The comment contrasted the alleged earnings of political officeholders with the income of lower-paid workers. The figures were presented by the commenter and were not independently verified.

Meanwhile, @fortune_4th criticised the use of foreign countries as a reference point in discussions about Nigeria’s economic difficulties.

“The same country that 80% of Nigerians has never been to, that’s the excuse these mfs keep using as reference to us,” the user wrote.

The reactions underline concerns about the gap between income levels and the cost of essential goods and services, including food, transportation and housing.

Social Media Backlash Highlights Cost-of-Living Concerns

The controversy has brought renewed attention to the public frustration surrounding Nigeria’s cost-of-living pressures and expectations of elected officials.

While inflation affects countries around the world, its impact on households varies according to income levels, purchasing power, social protection and the prices of essential goods and services.

For many of the commenters, the central issue was not whether other countries were experiencing inflation, but whether Nigerians could afford basic necessities and whether their incomes were keeping pace with rising expenses.

The debate also highlights the political sensitivity of economic communication, particularly when public officials defend government policies amid widespread financial pressure.

As reactions continue, the controversy underscores the demand among Nigerians for public statements on the economy to address local realities, including wages, fuel prices and the affordability of essential goods.
