Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has announced his intention to contest the next FIFA presidential election, setting up a potential challenge to incumbent president Gianni Infantino and promising major reforms at football’s global governing body.

Key Highlights

  • Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has announced his FIFA presidential bid.
  • The 55-year-old former Switzerland international would potentially challenge incumbent Gianni Infantino.
  • Vega says his campaign will focus on FIFA reform, credibility and restoring trust.
  • He previously attempted to enter the FIFA presidential race in 2015 and 2019.
  • Vega failed to secure the required backing of five FIFA member associations for his 2019 bid.
  • He has called for a new direction and fundamental changes to FIFA’s governance.

Ramon Vega Announces FIFA Presidential Bid

Vega, who also played for Celtic and Watford during his professional career, is the first candidate to publicly confirm his intention to contest the FIFA presidency, according to the report.

The former Switzerland international moved into the finance sector after retiring from professional football in 2004.

Announcing his latest political campaign within football administration, Vega said his objective was to reunite the global football community and introduce lasting reforms at FIFA.

“I am standing to reunite the global football family, deliver genuine and lasting reform, modernise Fifa for the 21st Century, restore stability and credibility, and rebuild the trust that our game urgently needs,” Vega said.

Vega Promises FIFA Reform

Vega said his experience in football and business had prepared him for the leadership role at FIFA.

He argued that the game should serve the interests of players, coaches, referees, supporters, clubs, leagues, associations and communities, rather than being centred on administrators or individual office holders.

The former defender also criticised what he described as weaknesses in FIFA’s governance and divisions within the organisation.

According to Vega, continued disputes within football’s governing structures could undermine confidence in FIFA.

Potential Challenge to Gianni Infantino

Vega’s announcement comes amid criticism directed at incumbent FIFA president Gianni Infantino over a number of issues surrounding the organisation.

Infantino has faced reported opposition over proposals linked to commercialising parts of FIFA’s World Cup business, including a reported plan involving private investors.

Despite the criticism, Infantino has maintained that he remains committed to leading FIFA.

The development could therefore set the stage for a contested FIFA presidential race if Vega secures the necessary support to appear on the ballot.

Vega Previously Tried to Become FIFA President

The latest announcement is not Vega’s first attempt to seek the FIFA presidency.

He previously considered entering the race in 2015, following the suspension of former FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

In 2019, Vega again announced plans to challenge Infantino but was unable to secure the required backing of five FIFA member associations needed to qualify for the ballot.

His latest declaration indicates that he intends to make another attempt to secure the support required to contest the election.

‘FIFA Needs a New Direction’

Vega has positioned governance reform and institutional credibility at the centre of his campaign.

He argued that FIFA requires fundamental changes rather than limited or cosmetic adjustments.

“Fifa needs a new direction and fundamental reform,” he said.

The former Tottenham defender said his proposed approach would focus on rebuilding trust across the global football community and modernising FIFA for the 21st century.

The outcome of his latest attempt will depend on whether he can meet FIFA’s eligibility and nomination requirements and secure the necessary backing from member associations.
