A senior lecturer at the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after he was reportedly found unconscious and unresponsive in a hotel room following an encounter with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

AAU Lecturer Dies In Ekpoma Hotel
The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
According to the Edo State Police Command, Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman before reportedly sending her out to purchase water.
The woman, identified by the police as Angela Defa Jacob, reportedly returned to the room and found the lecturer lying dead.
The police confirmed the incident on Tuesday and said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
Police Arrest Three Over Lecturer’s Death
The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the command received a report about the incident at about 8pm on October 5, 2026.
She said Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel and engaged the services of the woman before sending her to buy water.
“On October 5, 2026, at about 8 pm, the command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob,” Ikoedem said.
She added that the woman found Uwuigbe dead when she returned to the room.
According to the police spokesperson, the hotel owner, manager and the woman were taken into custody in connection with the case.
Uwuigbe’s remains were subsequently deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary pending further investigation.

Ambrose Alli University Confirms Lecturer Was Staff
The Public Relations Officer of Ambrose Alli University, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of the institution’s staff.
However, he stressed that the incident occurred outside the university and had no connection with the institution’s official activities.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” Aladenika said.
The university maintained that the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death were a private matter and not related to the institution.
Police Investigate Circumstances Of Death
The police investigation is expected to establish what happened inside the hotel room before Uwuigbe’s death and determine whether any criminal offence was committed.
The arrest of the hotel owner, manager and the woman is part of the ongoing investigation, while the lecturer’s remains remain in the mortuary.
The Edo State Police Command has yet to disclose the specific cause of death pending the outcome of the investigation and other relevant examinations.
