President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engineer Habu Ahmed Gumel, has received an Award of Excellence from the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) at its Congress in Sal, Cape Verde.
The award recognises Gumel’s contributions to sports administration, volleyball development and the growth of the Olympic Movement in Nigeria and across Africa.

As NOC President, Gumel has remained a prominent figure in Nigeria’s Olympic movement, representing the country at various continental and international sporting engagements.
His leadership experience extends to the Confederation of African Volleyball and the wider international sports community, where he has held influential positions and contributed to sports administration and development.
Beyond volleyball and the Olympic movement, Gumel has served as Treasurer-General of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and has participated in the activities of the international Olympic movement.
He is also an Honorary Member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), reflecting his long-standing contribution to international sports administration.

Gumel’s Career Beyond Sports
Gumel’s professional career also extends into engineering. He is a civil and structural engineer and has previously served as President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
His experience in both engineering and sports administration has made him a notable figure in Nigeria’s professional and sporting communities.
The latest CAVB recognition adds to the honours Gumel has received for his contributions to sports and international relations.
In 2022, the Japanese government conferred on him the Order of the Rising Sun in recognition of his contribution to strengthening relations between Japan and Nigeria through sports.
The CAVB Award of Excellence represents another recognition of Gumel’s contribution to volleyball, sports administration and the development of the Olympic movement in Nigeria and across Africa.
The honour comes as a significant recognition for Nigerian sports leadership at a major continental gathering of volleyball stakeholders focused on the development of the sport across Africa.
