A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Imo State has sentenced a woman, Rose Okon, to six months’ imprisonment for assaulting her 14-year-old niece by pouring hot water on her head and body.

Key Highlights

  • Rose Okon was sentenced to six months in prison for assaulting her 14-year-old niece.
  • The victim, Favour Emmanuel, sustained injuries after hot water was allegedly poured on her head and body.
  • The court granted the convict an option of paying a ₦50,000 fine.
  • The incident occurred in Umuneke, Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State.
  • The Stand For Humanity Foundation petitioned the police and supported the prosecution of the case.
  • The conviction was handed down on Friday, October 2, 2026.

Okon was convicted after pleading guilty to a one-count charge of assault before Chief Magistrate C.J. Nkwoada. The court, however, gave her the option of paying a ₦50,000 fine in lieu of the prison sentence.

According to the charge sheet, the incident occurred on September 19, 2026, at about 6pm in Umuneke, Ngor Okpala Local Government Area.

Okon, who had the teenager in her care, was accused of pouring hot water on Emmanuel, thereby causing her grievous harm.

The charge was brought under Section 355 of the Criminal Code, Cap C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, as applicable in Imo State.

During the proceedings, prosecution counsel, Sampson Obodo, presented photographs showing the injuries sustained by the victim. He also tendered statements made to the police by the accused, the victim and the Stand For Humanity Foundation, which petitioned the police and initiated the arrest.

Following her conviction, Okon was invited to make a plea in mitigation. She appealed to the court for mercy, while her counsel, Innocent Onyekwere, also urged the magistrate to temper justice with mercy.

Foundation Supports Prosecution

The Stand For Humanity Foundation, led by its President, Chidiebube Okeoma, played a key role in bringing the matter before the court.

Okeoma, a journalist and child-rights advocate, led more than 20 members of the organisation to the court for the sentencing.

Speaking to journalists after the proceedings, Okeoma said the organisation pursued the case to demonstrate that child abuse is punishable under Nigerian law and to ensure that the allegations were subjected to legal scrutiny.

The case has also drawn attention to concerns surrounding the treatment of children placed in informal care arrangements and the role of civil-society organisations in seeking accountability where minors are allegedly abused or inadequately protected.

The conviction followed the court proceedings and sentence delivered on Friday, October 2, 2026.
