Family Confirms Police Re-Investigation Is Underway
Mohbad’s family, through its lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, disclosed the development in a statement dated September 29, 2026, explaining that the police re-investigation was already underway despite the recent dismissal of a separate suit by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to Ogungbe, the Aloba family submitted its petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, and it was received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7.
The petition, he said, raised concerns over inconsistencies in the previous investigative process and requested what the family described as a comprehensive forensic reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
The IGP subsequently approved the petition and forwarded it to the Lagos State Police Command for action. The matter was later assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau for further investigation.
Ogungbe said the family’s representative had already met with the new team of investigators and that the family remained engaged with the process.
“The family’s representative has since been invited and has engaged with the new team of investigators assigned to the matter,” the lawyer said.
He added that the family would continue to provide information, documents, witnesses and other relevant materials that could assist the investigation.
Family Says Court Case Dismissal Is Separate
The clarification came days after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a separate suit filed by the Break the Silence Foundation seeking an order compelling the police to reopen investigations into Mohbad’s death. The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026, was dismissed on September 25, 2026.
However, the Aloba family stressed that the court case was not instituted by the family and was separate from the petition it had submitted directly to the IGP.
The family therefore urged the public not to interpret the dismissal of the court action as an end to the police investigation initiated through its petition.
“The Aloba Family therefore does not wish the public to conflate the dismissal of that suit with the separate investigative process already commenced pursuant to the Family’s petition to the Inspector-General of Police,” the statement said.

Nigerians React on Social Media
The latest development has since generated renewed debate online.
Some Nigerians welcomed the IGP’s decision, arguing that the fresh investigation could help address unanswered questions surrounding the singer’s death.
Others, however, expressed frustration over the continued public controversy and called for the matter to be concluded.
One social media user, @IbekeMicheal, questioned the development, writing: “Where are we actually going on this gan gan. Thought there was a court ruling just recently. This country is confused.”
Another user, @dolapoatanda123, called for an end to the prolonged controversy, saying: “Atp if Una wan end this case mk Una end am abeg. It just seem Una dey use am divert attention and cause noise pollution. Mk Una allow the guy rest joor.”
However, @SalaudeenA… defended the continued pursuit of the case, arguing that the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death deserved further investigation.
“Mohbad must get justice by the grace of God, big thanks to the IG,” the user wrote.
Other reactions called for the fresh investigation to be based on evidence rather than speculation.
Harry, @AnamaliHarriso1, wrote: “Three years later, the questions surrounding Mohbad’s death are still not fully settled. Now that the IGP has approved the family’s petition for a fresh investigation, this is the time for a thorough, independent and transparent process. No assumptions, no trial by social media, just evidence and the truth.”
Family Vows to Keep Cooperating With Investigators
The renewed investigation comes nearly three years after Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. His death triggered widespread public outrage and demands for accountability, while his remains were later exhumed for an autopsy.
The family has said it will continue cooperating with investigators and providing materials that may assist the new team.
According to the lawyer, the objective is to ensure a credible and transparent process capable of establishing the facts surrounding Mohbad’s death.
“The re-investigation is ongoing. The Aloba Family remains fully engaged. The pursuit of justice for Mohbad continues,” the family stated.
