The Federal High Court in Abuja has remanded Adeniyi Adeyemi, 38, at the Kuje Correctional Centre after he pleaded not guilty to an eight-count charge bordering on alleged conspiracy, forgery and impersonation.
Justice Mohammed Umar ordered Adeyemi’s remand on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, following his arraignment over allegations that he created and operated the purported Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) and presented himself as its Director-General. The case has been adjourned until October 12 for hearing of his bail application and further proceedings.

Adeniyi Adeyemi Pleads Not Guilty
Adeyemi pleaded not guilty to all eight counts when the charges were read to him before Justice Mohammed Umar.
The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/562/2025, was initially instituted by the Nigeria Police Force before the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice took over the prosecution.
The Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, appeared for the Federal Government.
Adeyemi was brought before the court after an earlier bench warrant was issued following his failure to appear for arraignment. He was subsequently arrested in Osogbo, Osun State, and returned to Abuja for the proceedings.
Prosecutors Accuse Adeyemi of Running Purported Government Agency
The prosecution alleges that Adeyemi created and operated the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, also referred to in some documents as the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council.
The Presidency has repeatedly disowned the organisation, saying there was no government appointment authorising Adeyemi to serve as its Director-General.
According to Reuters, authorities allege that the purported agency obtained office space at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja, secured a budget allocation and attempted to open accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria. These allegations remain subject to the court proceedings.
Forged Appointment Letter Among Alleged Documents
The charges allege that Adeyemi and two other persons, identified as Femi and Anu, conspired to forge documents connected to the purported agency.
Among the documents cited by the prosecution are an appointment letter allegedly issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and purportedly signed by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila.
Other documents allegedly included State House letterheads, a purported approval for the commencement of the council and correspondence seeking office accommodation, staff accounts and collaboration with government ministries.
One of the counts accuses Adeyemi of falsely representing himself as the Director-General of the purported council, contrary to Section 179 of the Penal Code. He denied the allegations.

Adeyemi’s Lawyer Seeks Bail
Adeyemi’s lawyer, Genesis Francis, told the court that a bail application had been filed on behalf of his client, citing ill health.
Justice Umar, however, did not hear the application immediately because of the court’s crowded cause list.
The matter was subsequently adjourned until October 12, when the court is expected to consider the bail application and proceed with the case.
Two Alleged Co-Defendants Remain at Large
The charge names two other defendants, identified as Femi and Anu.
The prosecution alleges that the two individuals were involved in the alleged conspiracy but have not been arrested.
Adeyemi’s arrest followed a prolonged investigation into the purported agency and allegations surrounding its activities within government offices.
Presidency Disowns PFIPC
The Presidency has maintained that the PFIPC was not established as a legitimate Federal Government agency and that Adeyemi was never appointed to head it.
The controversy previously attracted the attention of the House of Representatives, whose investigative panel examined the purported appointment letter attributed to the Office of the President.
PUNCH reported that the House panel subsequently described the document attributed to Femi Gbajabiamila as fabricated.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission also investigated the matter and reported that the purported agency had no legal backing.
Court to Determine Allegations Against Adeniyi Adeyemi
The allegations against Adeniyi Adeyemi have not been established by the court.
His plea of not guilty means the Federal Government will be required to present evidence in support of the charges, while Adeyemi will have the opportunity to challenge the prosecution’s case.
He will remain at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of his bail application or further order of the court.
The case resumes on October 12, 2026.
