African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has vowed to resign from office if Nigeria does not begin to experience significant change within one year of an ADC administration taking office.
Amaechi, the running mate to ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election, made the statement during an appearance on Africa Independent Television’s Democracy Today programme, where he discussed the opposition party’s plans and the forthcoming election.
According to a clip of the interview shared by AIT on X, Amaechi said: “If Nigeria does not begin to change one year after we get to office, I will resign.”

Rotimi Amaechi Makes One-Year Resignation Pledge
Amaechi’s latest statement places a specific timeframe on his expectation of measurable progress under an ADC-led administration.
The former Rivers State governor and former Minister of Transportation said his resignation would follow if Nigerians did not begin to see changes within the first year in office.
The statement comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election. INEC’s final list of presidential and vice-presidential candidates confirms Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi as the ADC ticket for the election scheduled for January 16, 2027.
Amaechi and Atiku Form ADC 2027 Ticket
The ADC formally selected Amaechi as its vice-presidential candidate in June 2026 after Atiku emerged as the party’s presidential candidate.
The party said the decision followed consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women stakeholders and representatives from across the country.
The ADC subsequently uploaded the particulars of Atiku and Amaechi to the INEC nomination portal as part of its preparations for the 2027 election.
Amaechi had finished as runner-up in the ADC presidential primary before being selected as Atiku’s running mate.
Amaechi Previously Promised to Resign Over Corruption
The latest pledge follows an earlier commitment Amaechi made in August 2025 while seeking the ADC presidential ticket.
At the time, he said that if elected president, he would eliminate corruption within his first month in office or resign.
“If it doesn’t disappear, I will tender my resignation letter, and I will leave,” Amaechi said during an X Space conversation in August 2025.
That earlier statement was made when Amaechi was still seeking the ADC presidential ticket. He subsequently emerged as Atiku’s running mate after Atiku won the party’s presidential primary.

Amaechi Calls for Grassroots Mobilisation
