The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his visit to France amid insecurity and economic hardship in Nigeria, questioning his absence while citizens are being kidnapped and killed.
Obi spoke on Thursday during the official inauguration of the NDC Delta State campaign headquarters/townhall meeting in Asaba, where he promised to prioritise security, healthcare and infrastructural development if elected president.
“People are dying in Nigeria. He is in France when they are kidnapping people in Nigeria,” Obi said, pledging to spend more time addressing the country’s domestic challenges.
On healthcare, the former Anambra State governor promised to improve public hospitals and discourage government officials from seeking medical treatment abroad without appropriate referrals.
“We want you to visit the hospitals here so we will fix them. We will make them work,” he declared.
Obi also lamented the deplorable condition of infrastructure in the Niger Delta, particularly the East-West Road, despite the region’s enormous contribution to Nigeria’s revenue.
“One thing I’m going to show the Niger Delta is that the days when you do not see the impact of your wealth are gone,” he said.
He promised transparency in the management of public resources, assuring Nigerians that his administration would account for government revenue and ensure that oil-producing communities benefit from their resources.
Obi further announced that he would return to Delta State to campaign across its communities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Earlier, the NDC governorship candidate in Delta State, Mr. Chris Iyovwaye, criticised the country’s deteriorating security, infrastructure and employment situation, questioning why the ruling party is seeking another term in office.
“There is no road. There is no security. There are no jobs. Everything is out of place, and yet they say they want to continue in power. Will you allow that to happen?” he asked.

Iyovwaye said Nigerians were increasingly identifying with Obi because of his lifestyle and approach to managing public resources, expressing confidence that he would prioritise public welfare over personal interests.
Speaking on behalf of the party’s candidates and leaders present at the inauguration, he urged Nigerians to take responsibility for their political future.
“We cannot leave this country the way it is. 2027 is our year. That is the year God has ordained for a turnaround. But we must all rise now to take our destiny into our hands,” he declared.
Other speakers at the event included the former Deputy President of the Senate and NDC senatorial candidate for Delta Central, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who assured supporters of a better future for the country once the party takes over the helms of affairs.
