The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced a total and indefinite strike across the three universities owned by the Lagos State Government over the alleged failure of the state government to implement the 2025 agreement reached between the union and the Federal Government.

Key Highlights

  • ASUU declares a total and indefinite strike in three Lagos universities.
  • Affected institutions are LASU, LASUED and LASUSTECH.
  • Strike follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government.
  • Union demands domestication and implementation of the December 2025 agreement.
  • Demands include the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and welfare provisions.
  • ASUU says it remains open to dialogue and will suspend the strike once issues are resolved.
  • Industrial action is expected to affect students and the academic calendar.

The affected institutions are Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo; Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Oto/Ijanikin; and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu.

The strike was declared on Tuesday following separate congresses held by ASUU branches in the three institutions.

The development followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government on August 31, 2026.

In a joint statement titled, “Expiration of Ultimatum: ASUU Declares Total, Indefinite Strike Across Lagos State-owned Universities,” the union said the industrial action became necessary after the government failed to provide a satisfactory resolution or concrete implementation plan.

The statement was signed by ASUU-LASU Coordinator, Dr Olusegun Babalola; Acting Chairperson of ASUU-LASUED, Comrade Grace Olayemi; and ASUU-LASUSTECH Chairperson, Comrade Murisiku Onigemo.

ASUU Demands Implementation of 2025 Agreement

The lecturers said the ultimatum expired without meaningful engagement from the state government, despite an earlier warning issued on September 10.

According to the union, the government allowed the September 13 deadline to pass without initiating dialogue over its demands.

ASUU’s major demand is the full domestication and implementation across the three institutions of the December 2025 agreement between the union and the Federal Government.

The agreement includes the implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and critical welfare provisions for serving and retired academic staff.

The union accused the Lagos State Government of prolonged inaction, saying it had exhausted available avenues for resolving the dispute before resorting to industrial action.

Union Says It Exhausted Dialogue Channels

ASUU said it had written formal letters to the university administrations, Governing Councils and the Visitor before issuing the 14-day ultimatum.

The union added that the steps taken had the backing of its national leadership.

The lecturers also pointed to neighbouring states where similar issues had reportedly been addressed, urging the Lagos State Government to follow their example.

“ASUU national fully expects the Lagos State Government to tow the line of other state governors who acted swiftly to resolve the matters to the absolute advantage of their respective universities and staff,” the union said.

Strike to Continue Until Demands Are Resolved

The union warned that the ASUU strike in Lagos State universities would continue indefinitely until the government meaningfully engages with the lecturers and signs, domesticates and fully implements the applicable provisions of the 2025 agreement.

ASUU, however, said it remained open to dialogue and would restore academic activities as soon as the outstanding issues were satisfactorily resolved.

The union acknowledged the potential impact of the strike on students and the academic calendar, saying the decision was taken “with a heavy heart” after exhausting other avenues.

It appealed to students, parents, university communities and other stakeholders for their understanding and support.

ASUU also assured the managements of LASU, LASUED and LASUSTECH that the industrial action was not intended as an adversarial action against the university authorities but was aimed at securing implementation of the outstanding agreements by the Lagos State Government.
