Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has commissioned and handed over a newly constructed 42-room patients’ apartment to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the state.

The facility, constructed by the Borno State government, is designed to provide accommodation for relatives and visitors of patients receiving treatment at the teaching hospital, particularly those who travel long distances to Maiduguri for medical care.

Speaking during the commissioning and handover, Zulum said the intervention is part of his administration’s broader efforts to support healthcare institutions and improve the welfare of patients and their families.

The patients’ apartment is the latest in a series of interventions by the governor at UMTH. His administration had earlier provided a N100 million intervention to address funding gaps for medical consumables and other hospital needs.

The governor also constructed 24 three-bedroom residential apartments for medical personnel at the hospital, aimed at addressing accommodation challenges and ensuring that doctors and other health workers live closer to patients.

In another major intervention, Zulum approved N1 billion in financial support for kidney transplant and maternal health services at UMTH.

He also provided N500 million in assistance to the hospital following the 2024 flood disaster.

Beyond the teaching hospital, the governor has extended his administration’s support to several federal institutions and agencies operating in Borno State.

These interventions include the provision of patrol vehicles to security agencies and formations to strengthen security operations across the state, as well as the construction of housing quarters and other facilities at the University of Maiduguri.

Zulum also approved hundreds of millions of naira in take-off grants for the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Azare; the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno; and the Federal College of Education, Gwoza.

The Chief Medical Director of UMTH, Prof. Ahmed Ahidjo, expressed appreciation to the governor, describing his continued support as significant to the hospital’s operations and development.
