Sustained military operations by troops of Operation HADIN KAI have triggered a significant increase in the number of terrorist fighters and associates surrendering across Nigeria’s North-East, with the theatre recording a 213 per cent rise in surrenders within one week.
The development, according to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North-East), followed intensified ground operations, engagements against identified terrorist positions and sustained disruption of terrorist logistics and supply routes.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters JTF North-East, Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, said the operations were aimed at degrading the operational capabilities of terrorist groups and restricting their freedom of movement across the theatre.
Goni said the sharp increase in surrenders, compared with the preceding week, reflected growing pressure on terrorist fighters and associates to abandon their activities and submit to established surrender procedures.
The military said the emerging trend was further reinforced on Wednesday when two high-profile terrorist members surrendered to troops, bringing arms, ammunition and other military items with them.
According to the statement, the recovery of the weapons and ammunition provides further evidence of the impact of sustained military pressure on the cohesion, morale and operational sustainability of terrorist elements.
The development, it added, also points to a diminishing capacity among terrorist groups to retain fighters and sustain prolonged operations.
In a related development, additional terrorist members surrendered to troops of 202 Battalion in Bama on August 7, 2026, at New Abaram.
Their surrender reportedly followed sustained military operations and internal disagreements within the terrorist enclave.
The surrendered individuals were screened, while mobile phones and other items were recovered from them before they were handed over for further action in accordance with established procedures.
The military viewed the development as another indication of the growing impact of sustained operational pressure and internal fractures within terrorist ranks.
The Theatre Command attributed the growing frequency of surrenders to its multi-dimensional approach, combining offensive ground operations, precision engagements and systematic disruption of terrorist logistics and supply networks.
By restricting the terrorists’ ability to manoeuvre, regroup and replenish their supplies, the military said troops were progressively narrowing their operational options and weakening their capacity to sustain attacks.
The Command said the rising number of surrenders should therefore not be viewed as isolated individual decisions, but as part of a broader trend reflecting the cumulative impact of military pressure on terrorist capability, cohesion and morale.

Operation HADIN KAI, it stated, would continue to maintain legitimate military pressure against terrorist elements while providing appropriate channels for those willing to surrender.
The ultimate objective, according to the Command, is to further degrade terrorist capabilities, restore security and create the conditions for lasting peace and stability across the North-East.
The Theatre Command also called on members of the public to continue supporting military operations by providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
It further urged terrorists and their associates to abandon violence and take advantage of available surrender channels.
