Content creator Samuel Adegbeyi, popularly known as Baami, has revealed how a N30,000 loan he took to help his former girlfriend start a business spiralled into a debt crisis that nearly ruined his life.

Key Highlights

  • Content creator Samuel Adegbeyi, popularly known as Baami, revealed how a N30,000 loan he took to support his former girlfriend’s business eventually grew into a debt of over N300,000.
  • After the relationship ended, Baami was left responsible for repaying the loan.
  • Accumulating interest and a short repayment period pushed him into taking additional loans, trapping him in a cycle of borrowing.
  • He said the financial crisis severely affected his emotional and physical well-being, leaving him barely able to function for about four months.
  • The debt crisis also disrupted his education, preventing him from returning to school for his HND as planned.

Baami said the relationship ended shortly after he gave his girlfriend the money, leaving him to bear the burden of repaying the loan.

According to him, the short repayment period and accumulating interest caused the debt to rise from about N30,000 to more than N300,000.

He said he subsequently resorted to borrowing from other loan platforms to settle the initial debt, eventually becoming trapped in a cycle of borrowing.

“The loan had a very short repayment period, and because I couldn’t repay on time, the interest kept increasing daily. Eventually, a loan of about N30,000 grew to more than N300,000,” he said.

The content creator disclosed that the financial crisis affected him emotionally and physically, leaving him unable to function normally for several months.

“For almost a year, I struggled financially and emotionally. There was a period of about four months when I could barely function. I stayed indoors most of the time, and the friend I lived with took care of me.

“He cooked for me, and sometimes I ate leftovers the following morning because I could barely take care of myself. It was one of the most difficult periods of my life, and I survived only by God’s grace,” he added.

Baami said the debt crisis also disrupted his education, as he could not return to school for his Higher National Diploma when expected.

He, however, believes the setback ultimately paved the way for his career in content creation.

Baami said he began creating content in 2024 while in HND II after his manager encouraged him to give social media a chance.

He initially resisted the idea because he did not want to become a public figure or expose himself on social media.

“I initially wasn’t interested because I didn’t want to expose myself on social media or become a public figure. However, he kept encouraging me until I agreed.

“Everything I have achieved today started because of that encouragement,” he said.

According to him, his original ambition was to become a chartered accountant, and he initially viewed content creation as something temporary.

However, as his audience grew and more opportunities emerged, he began to see content creation as a viable career.

His breakthrough came on TikTok, where he started hosting live sessions and receiving virtual gifts from his followers.

Baami said his first major earnings from TikTok amounted to about N500,000.

He later expanded to Facebook and received his first payout from the platform in January 2026, earning about $200.

His growing popularity has also seen him work with notable content creators and entertainers, including Oluwadolarz, Nasboi, Shank and Cute Abiola.

Baami described his experiences with the personalities as positive, saying they had encouraged and guided him whenever necessary.

He specifically recalled his first encounter with Cute Abiola, saying the comedian corrected and guided him without making him feel embarrassed.

“The celebrities I have worked with have always shown me love. Whenever I needed corrections, they corrected me in a positive way. Nobody has ever embarrassed me,” he said.

Baami said his content has evolved significantly since he started.

He initially created content involving women because some people believed his physical condition would prevent him from interacting and socialising with them.

He later moved into reaction videos and eventually began portraying different characters, including a boss, businessman and mechanic.

Beyond his career, Baami also recounted the challenges he experienced growing up.

He lost his father in 2009 after the latter became seriously ill while Baami was still in secondary school.

Following his father’s death, he said he lived with relatives and neighbours who helped him continue his education.

He also recalled experiencing discrimination in school because of his physical appearance.

According to him, some classmates initially avoided associating with him, but their attitude changed after they got to know him and recognised his abilities.

He admitted that hurtful comments about his appearance sometimes caused him to become deeply depressed.

Baami, who is the first of four children, said his mother is alive but currently dealing with health challenges.

He also said his family had different explanations about the cause of his physical condition, with his mother linking it either to childhood immunisation or a possible hereditary factor, while his grandmother offered a different account concerning his father.

He said the family never established a definite explanation.

Despite his difficult experiences, Baami said he has no regrets about his journey and believes his struggles ultimately helped shape his career.

He disclosed that he currently has about 1.3 million followers on Facebook, while his former TikTok account had about 1.4 million followers before it was banned.

His current TikTok page, he said, is a backup account.

Baami also revealed that he has followers in Nigeria and other countries, including India, and hopes to expand his reach globally.

He said he does not intend to pursue conventional employment with his educational qualification for now because content creation currently provides enough income to meet his needs.

“I have told my manager that I don’t want to use my certificate to look for a job,” he said.

Although he has also built a YouTube channel, Baami said he is yet to begin earning from the platform.

On marriage, the content creator said he remains open to settling down despite his previous relationship experience.

He said his major concern is finding a partner who genuinely loves him rather than someone attracted to his money or fame.

“I believe that, by God’s grace, I will find someone who genuinely loves me and supports me,” he said.

Looking ahead, Baami said he hopes to build a global career in content creation within the next three to five years.

“I believe content creation will take me to many places. It will become a global journey for me,” he said.

He added, “I see myself becoming a global creator.”
