The Enugu State Police Command has assured the family of Inspector Ikechukwu Obodo, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Enugu, that the fleeing driver will be tracked down and brought to justice.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, conveyed his condolences during a visit to the deceased officer’s wife, children and family through a delegation led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, ACP Oliver Odimega.
Describing the incident as a painful loss, Giwa said the death of Inspector Obodo, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree holder, was a tragedy not only for his family but also for the Nigeria Police Force and his colleagues.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the officer’s soul and asked God to grant his family the strength to bear the loss.
The Commissioner assured the bereaved family that the Command remains committed to identifying, arresting and prosecuting the driver responsible for the fatal crash.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred at about 7:00 p.m. on July 5 along Bisala Road, Enugu.
The police said Inspector Obodo was travelling to his duty post when the commercial bus conveying him failed to stop at his designated bus stop near Pascan Jake Bus Stop, dropping him several metres away.
The statement said an argument reportedly ensued between the officer and the bus driver after they alighted. During the altercation, an unidentified speeding vehicle struck the inspector and fled the scene, while the commercial bus driver also drove away.
Passers-by alerted officers from the New Haven Police Division, who rushed the victim to Parklane Hospital, where he was confirmed dead. His remains were later deposited in the hospital mortuary for preservation and post-mortem examination.
The Command also dismissed rumours circulating on social media that the officer was hit by a government or security convoy, stressing that ongoing investigations have found no evidence to support the claim.
SP Ndukwe assured the public that efforts to identify and apprehend the fleeing driver are ongoing.
