Nigeria is set to witness its biggest-ever grassroots football competition following the unveiling of the Renewed Hope Unity Cup logo, with organisers announcing that the tournament will feature teams from all 774 local government areas of the country.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday, the National Convener of the Renewed Hope Unity Cup, Suleiman Kwande, described the initiative as a landmark project designed to transform grassroots football while promoting national unity, youth empowerment and sustainable development.

Kwande said the tournament is the first of its kind in Nigeria’s football history, bringing together all 774 local governments in one unified competition to provide equal opportunities for talented young footballers, regardless of their geographical location or economic background.

“The National Renewed Hope Unity Cup is more than a football competition. It is a bold national investment in Nigeria’s future.

“It is a platform that will unite communities, empower young people, discover hidden talents, strengthen grassroots football, build coaching capacity, stimulate local economies and promote peace through the universal language of football,” he said.

He explained that beyond identifying football talent, the competition aligns with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda by fostering national cohesion, encouraging healthy lifestyles and creating sustainable opportunities for young Nigerians.

According to Kwande, all matches will be professionally produced and streamed live on digital platforms, giving participating players unprecedented exposure to football clubs, academies, licensed agents, national team selectors and international scouts.

He also disclosed that participating teams will receive complete football kits, including jerseys, boots, footballs, training bibs and cones, while players and officials will benefit from welfare packages, insurance coverage where applicable and match allowances.

As part of the tournament’s long-term legacy, Kwande announced the introduction of a nationwide train-the-trainer programme, which will equip selected coaches from every local government area with modern coaching techniques, certification and technical education under the supervision of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Institute of Sports (NIS).

Upon completion of the programme, the trained coaches will return to their communities to mentor grassroots coaches, physical education teachers, academy instructors and football volunteers, creating a nationwide network of qualified coaches.

The initiative will also focus on youth development by equipping participants with leadership, discipline, teamwork, resilience and entrepreneurial skills while stimulating local economies through increased activities in transportation, hospitality, tourism, sports marketing, media and event management.

Kwande said football would also serve as a tool for peacebuilding, reconciliation and social integration by bringing together young people from diverse backgrounds in a spirit of healthy competition and shared national identity.

He noted that funding for the competition would come through strategic partnerships involving the federal government, state governments, corporate organisations, development partners, international football bodies, philanthropic organisations and other patriotic Nigerians committed to youth development.

Kwande, announced that player registration and kit distribution would begin on October 1, adding that all matches would be broadcast via live streaming.

He said the maiden edition would be restricted to male players aged between 18 and 21 years, with plans to introduce a women’s category in subsequent editions.

Also speaking, Benue State Football Association Chairman and member of the Nigeria Football Federation, Paul Edeh, described the tournament as a dream come true for grassroots football development.

The tournament will be held under the theme: “One Nation. One Vision. 774 Local Governments. Endless Opportunities. Football Unites. Football Empowers. Football Builds the Nation.”
