Chelsea are in advanced negotiations to sign experienced Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck as the Premier League club looks to add leadership and proven quality to its youthful squad.

The 35-year-old former England international is understood to be keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, with growing optimism that an agreement between both clubs could be reached in the coming days.

Chelsea’s pursuit of Welbeck reflects a subtle shift in the club’s transfer strategy after years of prioritising young talents.

The Blues are now seeking to blend youthful potential with experienced professionals capable of guiding the squad both on and off the pitch.

Welbeck enjoyed one of the most productive campaigns of his career last season, scoring 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances for Brighton.

Since joining the Seagulls from Watford in 2020, he has registered 51 goals in 201 appearances, establishing himself as one of the club’s most reliable attacking options.

Despite signing a one-year contract extension with Brighton in March, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2026-27 season, Chelsea remain hopeful of securing his signature. Brighton have declined to comment on the ongoing negotiations.

Chelsea’s attacking department could undergo significant changes before the transfer window closes.

Brazilian forward Joao Pedro is reportedly viewed as the club’s preferred attacking option, while Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu, and Nicolas Jackson also remain on the books.

Guiu is believed to be available for either a permanent transfer or a loan move, with Chelsea valuing the young striker at around £25 million.

Jackson, who recently returned to Stamford Bridge after a loan spell at Bayern Munich, is reportedly open to a move away amid interest from Aston Villa, despite initially being expected to remain with the London club.

Delap, who joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town for £30 million just a year ago, is also increasingly expected to leave in search of regular first-team football.

Questions also remain over the future of Dutch striker Emmanuel Emegha, despite his recent arrival from Strasbourg.

Chelsea have already strengthened their squad this summer with the club-record signing of Morgan Rogers for £117 million, while full-back Marco Palestra has also joined.

The Blues are also nearing the completion of a deal for centre-back Maxence Lacroix as they continue to reshape the squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
