Anthony Joshua overcame two dramatic first-round knockdowns to produce a sensational comeback victory over Albanian heavyweight Kristian Prenga, stopping his opponent in the second round to keep alive hopes of a blockbuster showdown with Tyson Fury.

Key Highlights

  • Joshua stages dramatic comeback: Anthony Joshua recovered from two first-round knockdowns to defeat Kristian Prenga by second-round stoppage in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
  • Early scare: Prenga knocked Joshua down twice in the opening round, raising fears of a major upset.
  • Second-round finish: Joshua responded with a powerful right hand and a follow-up combination that prompted the referee to stop the contest.
  • Career record improves: The victory moves Joshua’s professional record to 30 wins and 4 defeats.
  • Emotional return: The bout marked Joshua’s first fight since recovering from injuries sustained in a fatal road accident in Nigeria last December.

Fighting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the former unified heavyweight champion endured one of the most difficult openings of his career.

Just 20 seconds into the contest, Prenga stunned the British star with a powerful uppercut that sent Joshua crashing to the canvas.

Moments later, Joshua was floored again, leaving fans fearing an upset that could derail plans for a long-awaited clash with Fury.

Instead, Joshua responded with the resilience that has defined his career.

After surviving the opening-round scare, he returned with renewed determination in the second, timing Prenga perfectly with a crushing right hand before unleashing a decisive combination that forced the referee to stop the fight.

The victory takes Joshua’s professional record to 30 wins against four defeats and puts him firmly back on course for one of boxing’s most anticipated heavyweight contests.

The emotional night marked Joshua’s first fight since recovering from injuries sustained in a fatal road accident in Nigeria last December that claimed the lives of his close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele.

Holding back tears after the bout, Joshua dedicated the victory to their memory.

“It wasn’t just about power. That was spirit. That was Latz, that was Sina and their families. It’s been a very difficult time,” he said.»

The tribute was evident throughout the event, with Joshua wearing the names of his late friends on his fight attire while the ring canvas displayed the words “My Brother’s Keeper” in their honour.

With the win secured, attention immediately turned to the long-awaited all-British showdown with Tyson Fury. Although Fury did not attend the event despite widespread speculation, Joshua made it clear he is ready for the challenge.

“I respect everything Tyson Fury has achieved, but we’re both here now. I believe the fans deserve this fight,” Joshua said.

Promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that contracts for the mega-fight have already been signed, with only the venue and date still to be finalised.

Saudi Arabia and the United States remain the leading contenders to host the historic heavyweight encounter later this year.

While Joshua’s performance exposed vulnerabilities, his ability to recover from adversity showcased the fighting spirit that has made him one of boxing’s biggest stars.

For fans across the world, the dramatic victory not only reignited Joshua’s career but also brought the long-awaited clash with Fury a significant step closer.
