The Oyo State Government has revised the 2025/2026 academic calendar for public primary and secondary schools, directing schools across the state to resume on Monday, July 6, following the suspension of the month-long strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

The revised timetable was announced in a circular dated July 2, 2026, and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. B.T. Oyinloye.

According to the circular, schools will resume on July 6 to continue the ongoing academic session, which is expected to run for six weeks and end on Friday, August 14, 2026.

The ministry also approved a four-week holiday beginning on Monday, August 17, and ending on Friday, September 11, 2026.

It added that the 2026/2027 first term would commence on Monday, September 14, 2026.

The adjustment comes after the NUT suspended its industrial action, which had kept public primary and secondary schools shut across the state since June 1.
The strike was triggered by the May 15 attack on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area, where gunmen abducted teachers and pupils and killed two teachers, raising fresh concerns over insecurity in schools.

The union announced the suspension of the strike after discussions with the Oyo State Government.

NUT President, Titus Amba, said the decision to return to classrooms was taken in the interest of schoolchildren, noting that many pupils had remained out of school because of the crisis.

The abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire sparked widespread outrage, with education stakeholders and civil society groups demanding stronger security measures to safeguard schools and secure the release of those still in captivity.

Despite the resumption directive, concerns persist over the safety of schools in parts of the state, particularly as some of the abducted victims remain in the custody of their captors.
