Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy has reached another career milestone after setting a new all-time Spotify record for the highest number of monthly listeners ever recorded by an African artist.

Key Highlight:

  • Burna Boy set a new Spotify record with 47.3 million monthly listeners, the highest ever for an African artist.
  • He surpassed the previous record of 46.58 million monthly listeners held by Tyla.
  • The milestone was driven by the global success of “Dai Dai,” his collaboration with Shakira on the FIFA World Cup anthem.
  • “Dai Dai” reached No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Top Songs chart, making Burna Boy the first African artist to top the chart since Wizkid achieved the feat with Drake on “One Dance” in 2016.
  • Burna Boy is now on course to become the first African artist to surpass 50 million monthly Spotify listeners, underscoring the growing global reach of Afrobeats.

The Grammy Award-winning singer climbed to 47.3 million monthly listeners, surpassing the previous record of 46.58 million held by South African music sensation Tyla. The achievement cements Burna Boy’s position as the African artist with the largest monthly audience on the global streaming platform.

The surge in his streaming numbers has been fueled by the massive success of his collaboration with Colombian pop icon Shakira on the FIFA World Cup anthem, “Dai Dai.” The song has continued to gain global traction since its release, attracting millions of streams from listeners around the world.

In another major achievement, “Dai Dai” reached No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Top Songs chart, making Burna Boy the first African artist to top the chart in nearly a decade. The last African act to achieve the feat was Wizkid, whose collaboration with Drake on the global hit “One Dance” reached the summit in 2016.

Music industry observers believe Burna Boy’s latest record further highlights the growing global influence of Afrobeats and African music. His impressive streaming figures also put him on track to become the first African artist to surpass 50 million monthly listeners on Spotify, a milestone that would further cement his status as one of the continent’s biggest musical exports.

Reacting to the historic feat, World Music Awards celebrated the singer on social media, writing:

“Burna Boy breaks the all-time record as the African artist with the most monthly listeners in Spotify history (47.3M), surpassing Tyla (46.58M).”

The achievement has since sparked widespread celebrations among fans across social media, with many describing it as another landmark moment for Burna Boy and a significant victory for African music on the global stage.
