The Nigeria Police Force has become the latest institution to signal major investment in volleyball development, with Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu pledging increased support for the sport after witnessing the ongoing 3rd edition of the Comptroller-General of Customs Volleyball Premier League in Abuja.

The pledge, made on Saturday at the finale of the first phase of the league, underscores the growing appeal of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF)-organised competition, which continues to attract institutional backing and fresh investors into the sport.

Key Highlights:

  • IGP Olatunji Disu pledged police sponsorship of volleyball competitions.
  • He praised the police volleyball team’s performance and determination.
  • The police will also support judo and other sports.
  • Disu promised improved welfare and resources for police athletes.
  • The move boosts volleyball development and the NVBF league.

Speaking after watching the police men’s team defeat Sunshine Spikers, the inspector general of police praised the determination, resilience and fighting spirit displayed by the officers despite not having access to the best training facilities.

“They may not have had everything they needed for training, but their determination to come out on top was evident today.

“You have seen the tenacity of a Nigerian policeman in action. I am very happy to have been here today, and I am proud that they have made me happy with this performance,” Disu said.

Impressed by the team’s display, he announced plans by the police to deepen its involvement in sports development by investing in volleyball and other sporting disciplines.

“They have done so well. What better way can I honour them than by supporting the sport and sponsoring it? We will certainly consider sponsoring volleyball competitions. Not just volleyball, but also judo and other sporting events,” he stated.

The inspector general of police also reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare and performance of police athletes by providing them with the resources needed to compete successfully at the highest level.

“As the inspector-general of police, I cannot see my officers performing well and fail to plan for their future. I will continue to encourage and support them by providing everything they need to succeed,” he said.

Disu added that the polce’s commitment to sports extends beyond volleyball, revealing that the police football team is on the verge of securing promotion to the Nigeria National League (NNL).

“Our football team is also doing very well. Next week, they will play a decisive match that could earn them promotion to the Nigeria National League. ”

I will personally be there to support them, and as always, I believe the Nigeria Police will come out on top,” he added.

The inspector-general’s announcement is another boost for the Nigeria Volleyball Federation and the CGC Volleyball Premier League, which has continued to attract increased attention from government institutions, corporate organisations and sports stakeholders.

With the Nigeria Customs Service maintaining its strong commitment to the league, the police now appears set to join the growing list of institutions investing in the development of volleyball, further strengthening the sport’s future in Nigeria.
