Ghana produced a disciplined defensive display to earn a hard-fought 0-0 draw against England in their second Group match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
The result denied England an opportunity to secure early qualification for the knockout stage after their impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia in the opening fixture.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Thomas Tuchel’s men were unable to break down a well-organised Ghanaian defence that frustrated the Three Lions throughout the contest.
England came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 86th minute when Nico O’Reilly’s header crashed against the crossbar before the rebound fell to captain Harry Kane.
However, the striker fired over the bar from close range, missing what proved to be England’s best chance of the evening.
Speaking after the match, Tuchel praised Ghana’s defensive organisation.
“They defended with a lot of determination and discipline,” he said. “Harry was not involved as much as we would have liked because they stayed very compact. It was difficult to find space, and the few opportunities he had were just unfortunate.”
England finished with 79 percent possession and attempted 19 shots compared to Ghana’s solitary effort, marking the highest possession recorded by a team that failed to score in a World Cup match in the last six decades.
Kane admitted disappointment over his late miss but remained optimistic.
“I was waiting for a chance like that, and it came, but I just couldn’t keep the ball down,” he said. “I’d expect to score that more often than not, but that’s football. Sometimes those chances don’t go in.”
Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz credited his players for executing the team’s tactical approach to perfection.
“Our plan was to block and frustrate them from the first minute,” he said. “The players followed the strategy brilliantly.”
The Black Stars nearly snatched victory in the 78th minute after Abdul Fatawu dispossessed England midfielder Eberechi Eze before setting up Prince Adu, but defender Ezri Konsa recovered in time to prevent the forward from getting a clear shot on goal.

England dominated the first half but struggled to convert possession into clear-cut opportunities, while Ghana showed greater attacking ambition after the interval, with Marvin Senaya forcing the defence into action with a header early in the second half.
Midfielder Jude Bellingham acknowledged the challenge posed by Ghana’s defensive setup.
“They got exactly what they came for,” he said. “They defended really well, and despite all our possession, corners and shots, we couldn’t find a way through.”
The draw leaves England in a strong position to qualify for the Round of 32, while Ghana moved to four points from two matches, boosting their hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run in 2010.
England will wrap up their group-stage campaign against Panama on Saturday, while Ghana face Croatia in a crucial encounter that could determine qualification to the knockout rounds.
