Performing the official launch, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Daju Kachollom, described the programme as a timely intervention designed to provide relief for cancer patients and strengthen healthcare support systems across the South-East.

In his opening remarks, Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Professor George Ugwu, said the state government had continued to reposition the Enugu Health Sector through strategic investments and reforms aimed at delivering quality healthcare services.

According to him, Governor Peter Mbah’s administration has embarked on transformative projects, including the ongoing construction of the 300-bed Enugu International Hospital, expansion of healthcare infrastructure, and aggressive recruitment and development of healthcare professionals.

Ugwu reaffirmed the state’s commitment to building a resilient, accessible, and efficient healthcare system capable of addressing the growing health needs of residents.

“The government remains committed to ensuring that quality healthcare services are available and accessible to all citizens through sustained investments in infrastructure, manpower development, and healthcare delivery reforms,” he stated.

The event also attracted strong support from critical stakeholders within the medical community and traditional institutions.

The Chief Medical Director of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Professor Obinna Onodugo, emphasized the need for collaboration among governments, healthcare providers, development partners, and communities in addressing the growing cancer burden in Nigeria.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Samuel Asadu, commended both the Federal Government and the Enugu State Government for prioritizing the welfare of cancer patients and vulnerable families.

Speaking emotionally during the programme, a cancer survivor who requested anonymity highlighted the enormous financial challenges associated with cancer treatment and management.

The survivor described the intervention as a source of renewed hope for thousands of patients struggling to access quality care and life-saving treatment.

Also speaking, the South-East Liaison of the National Cancer Control Programme Technical Working Group, Emeritus Professor Ifeoma Okoye, described the initiative as a landmark intervention in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

She noted that beyond financial support, the programme would help increase cancer awareness, improve access to treatment, encourage early diagnosis, and address critical social factors that influence health outcomes.

According to Okoye, the fund represents a strong commitment by the government to reduce healthcare inequalities and improve the quality of life for cancer patients across the country.

The launch further underscores ongoing efforts to strengthen the Enugu Health Sector and position the state as a leading healthcare hub in Nigeria’s South-East region.
