The Maritime Component of Operation WHIRL STROKE has issued a safety advisory to boat operators, passengers, mariners, and residents of riverine communities following a significant rise in water levels caused by the ongoing rainy season.
Key highlights:
- Operation WHIRL STROKE warned mariners about rising water levels and stronger currents during the rainy season.
- Boat operators and passengers were advised to wear life jackets and carry safety equipment.
- Authorities banned overloading, pollution, and night sailing on inland waterways.
- Operators must register, carry identification, and follow safety regulations.
- Non-compliant boat operators risk sanctions as security forces work to protect waterways.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the component, acting on the directive of the Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara, warned that increased water levels could lead to stronger currents and turbulence, creating risks for water transportation and other activities along inland waterways.
The Maritime Component Commander, Lieutenant Commander Dusse Christopher Zakari, urged all operators within the Joint Operations Area to take precautionary measures to prevent boat accidents and loss of lives.
Among the directives issued, all passengers and boat operators are required to wear life jackets while on board, while boat owners must ensure that life buoys and essential emergency equipment are available on their vessels.
The advisory also warned against overloading of boats, pollution of waterways, and night sailing. According to the directive, marine operations must only take place between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily for security reasons.
